On the heels of the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic which is ravaging the country, the traditional monarch of Ogbozalla Opi Community in the ancient Opi Kingdom of Nsukka, Enugu State, His Royal Majesty (HRM) Eze Willy Ezugwu has begun to touch the lives of indigent members of the community by distributing palliatives materials to the residents.
At the flag off of the first phase of the distribution of the food items and other palliatives, over 1000 household in the Ogbozalla Opi Community have benefited.
The royal father and philanthropists, who was touched by the growing hunger and starvation caused by some preventive measures aimed at mitigating the spread of the dread Coronavirus disease, distributed the items at hi palace recently.
The palliative materials which included tubers of yam, bags of rice, cartons of noodles, soaps among others were distributed to the selected indigents member of the community.
In a chat with our reporter, the royal father said the aim of the palliative is to cushion the economic effect of the lockdown declared by the government to curb the spread of Corona virus pandemic.
In his words “I decided to help Enugu state government, and Nsukks Local Government to alleviate the suffering of the people. I’m doing this from my pocket, not from government coffers. This is the much I can do for now to my people to cushion the effect of Coronavirus pandemic in our community.
“I know it has not been easy for our people and so I have to carry out this humanitarian initiative to put smiles on the faces of the indigents member of my community so as to give them hope and sense of belonging,” he said.
He urged them to maintain their personal hygiene, wear face mask, observe social distance as well as, abide by other government directives to control the spread of the deadly virus.
Also speaking, Chief Patrick Omeje the Chairman of Nsukka LG, who was represented by Hon. Damian Eze the secretary of the council thanked Eze Opi for helping the government with his palliatives items describing it as uncommon generosity.
“This is an uncommon generosity, especially towards the indigents in the community,” he noted.
Hon. Eze who prayed for God’s blessings and more grace for Eze Opi, however, called another good spirited individuals to do the same in their various area and community.
Expressing her happiness, one of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Okachanma Loretta hailed the Eye Opi for the humanitarian gesture.
According to her, “we has been overwhelmed by the current situation of things cursed by the coronavirus. This palliative no doubt will go a long way in alleviating some of our sufferings.”
Another beneficiary, Mrs. Agbo Rita extolled Ezeugwu Opi for remembering them at this trying time. She prayed God to continue to bless them for their kind gesture.
