Ten persons, including police escorts, in the convoy of Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District of Anambra State, Ifeanyi Ubah, were feared killed whike no fewer than three of them were reported dead on the spot when he was attacked at Enugwu Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.
The senator was on its way to Nnewi, his country home, on Sunday night.
An eyewitness said the senator was reportedly injured in the attack in which some people described as an assassination attempt on the Senator elected on the platform of the Young Peoples Party (YPP).
An eyewitness said: āIfeanyi Ubahās convoy came under attack in Enugwu Ukwu this evening. He was ambushed by heavily armed men who opened fire on his convoy. Some of his aides were killed, including some police officers.
āThe senator managed to escape as his car was riddled with bullets.
āI was driving up to that spot from the link road to the express when some people in a shop shouted at me and asked me to turn back and take another road, which I didā, the eyewitness said.
A video of the incident surfaced on social media on Monday, with the natives speaking in Igbo Language.
From the video, it appeared that there was a victim of the gun attack who was still alive at the time of the recording as the video ended abruptly after a voice alerted that one of the victims was still breathing.
This is even as the lifeless bodies of the victims were seen lying inside the vehicles, and windscreens were completely shattered by bullets as shown in the video.
However, the Anambra State Police Command had on Monday reportedly confirmed that five persons, including two policemen and three civilians, were killed when gunmen attacked the convoy of the senator.
The police command, media reports say, disclosed that two other police officers were injured and receiving medical attention as at Monday.

Meanwhile, a source identified some of the victims of the attack as Senator Ubah’s treasurer, Mr Ikechukwu Odum and his personal assistant, Mr Goodness Mathias.
āAnother man killed, who was not in the convoy of the Senator, was identified as Onowu Agu-Ukwu Nri.
He was said to be a titled chief in the neighbouring Nri community and had just driven to Enugwu-Ukwu to drop someone who visited him but was unlucky to be at that gun point when Senator Ubah’s convoy was attacked.

But reacting to the attack on his convoy, Senator Ubah confirmed the deaths of some of his personal and security aides during the Sunday attack.
He confirmed Obum Ikechukwu and Goodness Mathias but said that some officials of Nigeriaās secret police, Department of State Services, were among those killed by the gunmen.
He also confirmed that some police officers were among the dead victims not did not give the casualty figures.
