Encroachment: Kwara State Government Sensitizes Ganmo Community

The Kwara State Government has again embarked on sensitisation and advocacy to Ganmo community, in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, to ensure healthy living of the people.

The state government has warned that incessant encroachments of roads by marketers displaying their wares as well as indiscriminate dumping of refuse will be sanctioned.

The Press Secretary to the State Ministry of Environment, Yakub Aliagan, in a statement quoted the State Commissioner for Environment, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman as disclosing that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq administration aims at eradicating road encroachment, indiscriminate dumping of refuse and open defecation in Kwara State, to enhance good standard of living and healthy environment, across the state.

The Commissioner spoke during a recent courtesy call on the Oniganmo of Ganmo, Oba Kamaldeen Jimoh Akanbi, at his palace.

According to the Commissioner, “our visit is to appreciate your supports for the present administration, under the leadership Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and to as well intimate you with government policy, aimed at eradicating road encroachment, indiscriminate dumping of refuse and open defecation in Kwara State, to enhance good standard of living and healthy environment, across the state.”

Mallam Ndanusa also stated that, it is an offence punishable under the environmental laws, for marketers to display wares on pedestrian paths, medians and any other area that will inhibit both vehicular and people’s movements, adding that indiscriminate dumping of refuse on pedestrian paths, medians and any other unapproved dump sites, would attract fines or imprisonment.

The Commissioner who warned environmental violators to desist henceforth, “anybody caught selling goods on pedestrians or road medians or dropping refuse indiscriminately would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly immediately, according to the dictates of the law.

In his response, the Traditional Ruler of Ganmo, Oba Kamaldeen Jimoh Akanbi commended the government for engaging in various projects that has direct impact on the lives of Kwarans and the bold step taken to stop encroachments of roads as well as indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the state.

The Monarch then assured government of his people’s loyalty, pledging Ganmo community’s supports to this administration at achieving sanity in the market place and a healthy environment in the State.

Thanking the government team for for the sensitization and advocacy visit, the Chairman of the Ganmo Community, Alhaji Jamiyu AbdulRasheed informed the Commissioner that, Ganmo community has a taskforce that usually goes round during the market days, to checkmate traders, therefore requested for roro bins to be able to monitor indiscriminate dumping of refuse in Ganmo Community.
