Delta Governor Pledges Inclusive Governance for All, Including People with Disabilities
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed his commitment to running an all-inclusive government, ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens, including those living with disabilities.
“I am happy that you have come here in peace and we are in solidarity with you all. Governor Oborevwori has promised to run an inclusive administration that will include all Deltans, both those of you who have disability in hearing,” said Chief of Staff, Hon. Prince Johnson Erijo, on behalf of the Governor.
The Governor’s pledge came during a solidarity visit from the Delta State Association of the Deaf to Government House in Asaba, as part of the 2024 International Week of the Deaf celebrations.
Comrade Oyibo Emmanuel, Chairman of the Delta State Association of the Deaf, expressed the community’s desire for integration into government. “We urge the Governor to do something that he would be remembered for even after he leaves office,” Oyibo said.
Oyibo also highlighted the need for qualified special teachers in Delta’s 11 special schools, suggesting that deaf graduates could fill these roles. “Delta has 11 special schools and would love to have qualified special teachers to be posted to such schools for effective communication, teaching and learning,” he added.
The Governor assured the association that their requests would be looked into. “We have received all your presentations and we are mindful of them. We salute you for all the support, for your steadfastness, for your belief in the Oborevwori administration. We will continue to do more for you people and that is why your requests today will be looked into.”
The Governor’s commitment to inclusivity aligns with the theme of the 2024 International Week of the Deaf, “Sign up for sign language right.” This promise aims to promote equal opportunities and address the challenges faced by the deaf community in Delta State.
