Delta State Reaffirms Commitment to Prompt, Sustainable Pension Payments

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to ensuring the prompt and sustainable payment of pension and other emoluments to its employees.

This commitment was made clear during an interactive meeting with top bureaucrats, including Permanent Secretaries, Directors, and Heads of Parastatals, Departments, and Agencies, held at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed that his administration has paid over N14.5 billion towards various pension obligations, demonstrating its resolve to prioritize the welfare of its workforce. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between his administration and the state’s bureaucracy to effectively deliver on his MORE Agenda.

The Governor highlighted his administration’s efforts to improve the working conditions and benefits of state employees, citing the payment of promotion arrears, timely salary payments, and approval of training programs. He also mentioned the provision of vehicles for Permanent Secretaries and the extra N10,000 payment to each worker for three months following fuel subsidy removal.

Furthermore, Oborevwori cautioned the bureaucrats against engaging in unproductive practices, stressing that such actions undermine the state’s development. He specifically expressed concern over the collusion with contractors to deliver substandard projects, approval of inflated or unnecessary projects, and issuance of certificates for poorly executed jobs.

The Governor emphasized the need for accountability and transparency, noting that 80% of contracts are awarded to indigenous contractors. He urged the bureaucrats to prioritize the state’s interests and ensure value for money in all projects.

With a wage bill of approximately N55,000 workers, Delta State has one of the highest wage bills in the country, second only to Lagos. Oborevwori’s administration remains committed to sustaining pension payments and improving the overall welfare of its employees.
