Media Watchdogs Petition NBC to Sanction Dr. Reuben Abati and Arise TV
Coalition of Media Watchdog Organizations has submitted a formal petition to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) calling for swift action against Arise TV and Dr. Reuben Abati.
The petition alleges that Dr. Abati made unprofessional and divisive comments during the Arise TV Breakfast Show on November 21, 2024.
The comments in question allegedly perpetuated harmful stereotypes against the Igbo community, sparking concerns about the reinforcement of ethnic tensions. These statements were further amplified by extremist groups, exacerbating an already delicate socio-political climate, a statement signed by Dr. Ambrose Igboke, on behalf of the Coalition stated.
The petition highlighted several key issues, including Dr. Abati’s reference to the Igbo people in a broad, negative context, which risks inflaming ethnic tensions and promoting dangerous generalizations.
The petitioners also noted that his hostile response to a colleague, Ms. Ojy Okpe, on the following day’s broadcast, also demonstrated a troubling disregard for professional journalistic standards.
The petition called on the NBC to investigate the broadcast, hold Arise TV accountable, and sanction Dr. Abati for his unprofessional behavior. It also urges the NBC to promote inter-ethnic harmony by encouraging Arise TV to air programs that foster unity and counteract divisive narratives.
In a nation as diverse as Nigeria, the media plays a critical role in fostering unity. While open dialogue is essential in a democracy, it must be rooted in responsibility and respect.
The petition underscores the urgent need for media practitioners to uphold ethical standards and avoid stoking divisions that threaten national cohesion.
