….ALGON Chairman Mallam Aminu Hassan Jauro Leads LGA Chairmen and Stakeholders in Landmark Step to Modernize Birth Registration Across the State

In a major push to modernize civil registration and improve data management in Nigeria, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC), the Federal Ministry of Health, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has commenced the distribution of advanced equipment for the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) exercise in Taraba State.

The distribution marks a new phase in the drive to digitize and strengthen vital statistics infrastructure across all 16 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state, laying the groundwork for more efficient, accurate, and accessible records of births and other vital events.

The event, which brought together key stakeholders from across the state, saw the Taraba State ALGON Chairman and ALGON National Welfare Officer, Hon. Mallam Aminu Hassan Jauro, lead all 16 LGA chairmen, representatives of collaborating agencies, and community leaders to take delivery of the equipment.

Speaking during the ceremony, the State Director of the National Population Commission, Alhaji Karimu F. Yakubu, commended UNICEF and partner agencies for their continued support toward achieving a robust civil registration system in Nigeria. He described the initiative as “a significant milestone in strengthening Taraba’s institutional capacity for real-time birth registration and vital statistics management.”

Yakubu emphasized the importance of accountability and proper handling of the devices, urging all LGA focal persons and technical officers to ensure judicious use and maintenance of the distributed tools.

> “These devices are critical assets that will transform how we collect, store, and manage civil registration data,” he said. “We must handle them with care and ensure they serve their purpose effectively in every community.”

In his remarks, Hon. Mallam Aminu Hassan Jauro, ALGON Chairman, Taraba State, and ALGON National Welfare Officer, praised the Federal Government, NPC, and UNICEF for what he termed “a forward-thinking intervention” that would have far-reaching impacts on public health planning, education, and social development.

He described the E-CRVS exercise as a “game-changer” for grassroots governance and service delivery, assuring that all local government chairmen would provide the necessary support to ensure its full implementation across the state.

> “This project will not only enhance the accuracy of population data but also improve access to social services for our citizens, especially women and children,” Jauro stated. “We are committed to seeing it succeed in every local government in Taraba State.”

The distributed equipment includes a full suite of modern ICT tools—Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems, desktop computers, printers, ergonomic office furniture, data storage units, Verxid devices, birth notification forms, and birth certificates—all aimed at digitizing and streamlining the birth registration process.

Officials noted that the intervention follows a comprehensive capacity-building program earlier organized for local registration officers and focal persons to improve their digital literacy and operational efficiency in managing electronic birth registration systems.

The distribution ceremony was characterized by a palpable sense of optimism, with stakeholders describing the initiative as a bold step toward a data-driven governance structure that supports national planning, child protection, and sustainable development goals.

As the E-CRVS project rolls out across Taraba State, residents are expected to witness a more transparent, technology-driven registration process that ensures every child is counted, recognized, and given an identity from birth — a critical foundation for inclusive growth and human development.
