…Group Urges New Electoral Chief to Usher in Era of Credible, Transparent Polls Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Obidient Movement, a leading civic and political reform network associated with Nigeria’s growing democratic consciousness, has extended its congratulations to Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) on his appointment as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing his emergence as “a potential turning point in Nigeria’s electoral history.”
In a statement jointly signed by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator, and Ms. Nana Kazaure, Director of Strategic Communications and Media, the movement expressed optimism that Professor Amupitan’s tenure would mark “a significant milestone in the credibility, freedom, and fairness of Nigeria’s elections.”
The group commended the decision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Council of State to appoint an academic and legal luminary with a reputation for integrity and professionalism. The statement noted that the new INEC boss’s background as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and scholar of corporate governance and electoral law provides “a solid foundation for reforming the commission into a truly independent, transparent institution.”
> “As we reflect on the experiences of past INEC chairmen,” the movement said, “we are hopeful that your tenure will mark a significant milestone in the electoral history of Nigeria. We look forward to seeing a new electoral act that will enhance the credibility, freedom, and fairness of our elections, particularly as we approach the 2027 General Elections.”
The Obidient Movement, which played a prominent role in mobilizing citizens during the 2023 general elections, urged Professor Amupitan to prioritize public confidence, accountability, and electoral transparency as he assumes office. It expressed faith that his academic depth and moral standing could help “heal the wounds of mistrust” that have trailed Nigeria’s recent elections and restore faith in the democratic process.
> “We wish you a successful tenure and pray for God’s guidance and protection as you navigate the challenges of this critical office,” the statement added. “Congratulations once again, and we look forward to a new era of electoral excellence under your leadership.”
The message of goodwill comes amid widespread reactions across Nigeria following the unanimous approval of Professor Amupitan’s nomination by the National Council of State earlier this week. His appointment has been seen by political analysts as an opportunity to strengthen INEC’s institutional independence and rebuild public trust in the electoral system.
Professor Amupitan, a 58-year-old legal scholar from Kogi State and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, is expected to lead INEC into the next general election cycle in 2027.
For the Obidient Movement, his emergence symbolizes renewed hope for electoral justice and a chance to consolidate democratic reforms long demanded by civil society.
“Nigeria stands at a crossroads,” the group concluded. “The credibility of the next general elections will determine the future of our democracy. We believe Professor Amupitan’s leadership can help lay the foundation for a truly people-driven, transparent electoral system.”
