The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has thrown its political weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, while simultaneously moving to consolidate internal discipline and unity with the suspension of three prominent members accused of anti-association activities.
This formed the crux of resolutions reached at the 54th (Expanded) National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of ALGON, held on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, in Abuja, where top local government leaders from across the federation converged to deliberate on the state of the association and national governance.
The high-level meeting, presided over by ALGON National President, Hon. (Engr.) Bello Lawal, drew participation from NEC members representing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Also in attendance were past ALGON National Presidents — Hon. Felix Akabue, Hon. Alabi Kolade David, and Hon. Aminu Mu’azu Maifata — alongside the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Odunayo Ategbero, and other board members.

Tinubu Endorsed for Second Term
In a decisive political statement, the NEC unanimously endorsed President Tinubu for a second term in office, citing what it described as transformative policies that have strengthened grassroots governance.
“The National Executive Council unanimously endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for re-election come 2027,” the communiqué stated.
The endorsement motion, moved by former ALGON National President, Hon. Alabi Kolade David, and seconded by Hon. Anani Hamisu Mohammed, was adopted without dissent.
ALGON declared “total solidarity” with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, asserting that his administration has “restored dignity, fiscal capacity and functional autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 Local Governments and Area Councils.”
According to the council, “the policy trajectory of the Tinubu administration has not only empowered local governments but also strengthened governance at the grassroots level.”
The NEC further emphasized that “continuity of his administration will deepen the gains already recorded and ensure sustainable development across local councils nationwide.”
Crackdown on Alleged Impersonation, Disunity
In a move signaling zero tolerance for internal discord, the NEC endorsed the indefinite suspension of three local government chairmen over allegations ranging from impersonation to actions deemed detrimental to the association’s unity.
Those suspended include Hon. Zakari Iliya su, Chairman of Agwara Local Government Area and ALGON Chairman in Niger State; Hon. Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi, Chairman of Kaiama LGA and ALGON Chairman in Kwara State; and Hon. Abba Shehu Tambuwal, Chairman of Tambuwal LGA and ALGON Chairman in Sokoto State.
The NEC said the suspension followed findings of “impersonation, acting against the interest of the Association and abuse of constitutional provisions.”
The motion for their suspension was moved by Hon. (Dr.) Gbenga Fasua, ALGON Chairman in Ondo State, and seconded by Hon. Muhammad Dahiru Ambursa of Kebbi State.
Consequently, ALGON issued a strong public advisory distancing itself from the actions of the affected individuals.
“The NEC hereby puts on notice MDAs, State Governments, Development Partners, International Organizations, Associates, Stakeholders, Friends and indeed the general public that the above-mentioned Local Government Chairmen do not have the authority of the NEC to act on behalf of the Association,” the communiqué warned.
It added: “The general public is urged to be cautious, as ALGON will not be responsible for illegal acts and omissions by these individuals.”
Confidence in Bello Lawal’s Leadership
In a further show of unity, the NEC unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of ALGON National President, Hon. (Engr.) Bello Lawal.
The motion was moved by Hon. Lelei Isaac Tariye, ALGON Chairman of Bayelsa State, and seconded by Hon. Sefianu Isa, ALGON Chairman of Nasarawa State.
The council commended Lawal’s leadership style, describing it as visionary and transformative.
“NEC pledged its loyalty and support to the EXco and vowed to fight against any force that will bring disunity to the Association,” the communiqué noted.
ALGON also praised what it termed Lawal’s “strategic foresight and relentless drive in repositioning the Association through multisectoral engagement and inter-agency collaboration.”
Call for Security Enforcement
Rounding off its resolutions, the NEC called on security agencies to take decisive action against individuals allegedly impersonating ALGON officials.
“NEC urges security agencies in the country to deal decisively with any individual or persons illegally parading themselves as agents or officials of ALGON,” the statement concluded.
A Defining Moment for Grassroots Politics
The outcomes of the NEC meeting underscore ALGON’s growing role as a critical stakeholder in Nigeria’s political and governance architecture. Its endorsement of President Tinubu signals a strategic alignment with federal power, while its internal disciplinary actions reflect a renewed push for cohesion within the association.
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, ALGON’s position is expected to carry significant weight, particularly in shaping grassroots political dynamics across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
