The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified its political expansion ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the defection of several prominent politicians from across the country at a well-attended reception in Abuja.
The party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, alongside members of the National Working Committee, formally received the new entrants on Saturday, describing the development as a clear indication of growing nationwide confidence in the NDC.
Among those who joined the party are former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Comrade Babatunde Alli; the 2023 governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Taraba State, Professor Mohammed Sani Yahaya; and former member of the House of Representatives and ex-board member of the Code of Conduct Bureau, Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma. They were accompanied by thousands of supporters and established political structures.
A major highlight of the event was the formal decoration of the defectors with NDC face caps and the presentation of membership cards, symbolising their full integration into the party.
Welcoming the new members, Senator Dickson said their decision to align with the NDC reflects increasing trust in the party’s vision for national renewal and inclusive governance.
In his remarks, the National Chairman, Senator Cleopas, urged the defectors to remain committed to the party’s core values and to work within its structures to strengthen internal cohesion and broaden its national reach.
Explaining his decision to leave the PRP, Comrade Alli said it followed careful reflection on internal party dynamics, particularly the need for inclusivity, youth participation, and fairness in political processes.
“Every political party in this country needs inclusivity, youth participation, and fair processes. When those principles are weakened, it becomes difficult for some of us to remain. The emergence of the NDC has given me renewed hope that politics can be practised differently, with fairness and purpose,” he said.
On his focus within the NDC, Alli emphasised youth empowerment, stating that he sees the party as a platform for young Nigerians to thrive and intends to champion that cause with the support of the party leadership.
Also speaking, Professor Yahaya declared total grassroots mobilisation for the NDC in Taraba State, expressing confidence in the party’s prospects ahead of the next general elections.
“From the polling unit to the ward, local government, and state levels, we are joining the NDC in totality. We have already built a foundation; what remains is to consolidate that structure within the NDC. By the grace of God, 2027 is our time, and we are fully committed to taking the party’s message across Taraba State,” he said.
In his remarks, Hon. Agbonayinma expressed concern over the state of the nation, while affirming confidence in the NDC as a credible alternative for national renewal.
“Nigeria is bleeding and searching for direction. What was promised as ‘Renewed Hope’ has, for many Nigerians, turned into renewed hopelessness. Our country is blessed, yet poorly managed. We must confront corruption and rebuild trust in governance. I believe the NDC offers a viable platform for that renewal,” he said.
Speaking further on his political decision, Agbonayinma criticised what he described as the marginalisation of loyal party members, stressing that democracy must prioritise the collective interest of the people over individual dominance.
The event marks another significant milestone for the NDC as it continues to attract high-profile political actors and consolidate its national structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
