A frontline governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, has withdrawn from the race ahead of the party’s forthcoming primary election, citing extensive consultations and commitment to the greater good of the state.
In a statement addressed to the people of Kwara State, Prof. Sulaiman said his decision followed recent political developments and wide-ranging engagements with stakeholders across the state.
The aspirant, who had sought the APC ticket to contest the 2027 governorship election, said his ambition was driven not by personal interest but by a sincere desire to contribute to the unity, development, and progress of Kwara State.
According to him, his interactions with citizens across Kwara North, Kwara South, and Kwara Central reinforced a shared aspiration for a safer, stronger, and more prosperous state.
Prof. Sulaiman expressed appreciation to party members, supporters, and well-wishers for their encouragement, prayers, and overwhelming support throughout his political journey.
“After extensive consultations and recent developments, I have decided to withdraw from the gubernatorial race ahead of the forthcoming party primaries,” he stated.
He added that the decision was taken with deep reflection and a sense of responsibility, stressing that leadership must always be guided by wisdom, responsibility, and commitment to the collective interest.
Despite stepping down from the contest, the APC chieftain reaffirmed his loyalty to the ruling party and pledged continued support for the administration and leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He also assured party faithful of his commitment to the success of the APC in future elections, while pledging to continue supporting initiatives aimed at promoting peace, unity, and development in Kwara State and Nigeria at large.
Prof. Sulaiman further thanked his supporters for standing by him during the course of the governorship aspiration, describing their goodwill as unforgettable.
He noted that although his withdrawal may signal the end of a political process, it does not mark the end of his commitment to the advancement of Kwara State.
The development is expected to reshape political calculations within the APC ahead of the party’s governorship primary in the state.
