The Emeritus President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and Standard Flag Bearer for Somolu Federal Constituency in Lagos State, Hon. Alabi Kolade David, has called on Nigerians, particularly residents of Somolu, to embrace the virtues of sacrifice, unity, and selfless service as Muslims across the world celebrate Eid al-Adha.
In a goodwill message issued on Tuesday to commemorate the Islamic festival, Hon. Alabi described Eid al-Adha as a solemn reminder of faith, devotion, and commitment to the collective good of society.
According to the statement, the celebration “is not merely a feast—it is a covenant of faith, sacrifice, and service,” rooted in the historic submission and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS) to the will of Allah.
The former ALGON president said the symbolic act of Qurban should inspire citizens to abandon selfishness, pride, and division in favour of compassion, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
“The Qurban is more than ritual; it is a mirror held to the soul, asking each of us to lay down pride, selfishness, and division, so that unity and compassion may rise in their place,” he stated.
Hon. Alabi noted that Somolu’s vibrant commercial activities, energetic youth population, and hardworking families remain evidence of what can be achieved when communities unite around shared values and collective sacrifice.
He urged residents to use the Eid celebration as an opportunity to reconcile differences, strengthen communal bonds, and ensure that vulnerable members of society are not neglected.
“Our progress as a constituency is not built on individual triumphs, but on collective service—leaders listening, youth leading, and communities thriving together,” the statement added.
Quoting the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Hon. Alabi stressed the importance of mutual love, empathy, and social responsibility in nation-building.
“The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught: ‘None of you truly believes until you love for your brother what you love for yourself.’ Let this be the guiding principle for Somolu, where love becomes policy, service becomes culture, and unity becomes our legacy,” he said.
The Somolu Federal Constituency standard flag bearer further prayed for peace, justice, and continued development in the constituency and Lagos State at large.
He expressed hope that the spirit of sacrifice associated with Eid would transcend religious rituals and reflect in governance, neighbourhood relations, and daily interactions among citizens.
“May Allah accept our sacrifices, multiply our blessings, and keep Somolu moving forward in unity, peace, and progress. Eid Mubarak,” the statement concluded.
