The leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has praised party members and stakeholders for the orderly conduct of its nationwide primaries, which witnessed a massive turnout across several states of the federation.
The presidential, governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly primaries, held between Thursday and Friday, drew thousands of party supporters and delegates to voting centres in what observers described as a strong indication of the party’s growing national appeal ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director Esq., the NDC said the exercise was largely peaceful and transparent despite logistical difficulties linked to the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations and transportation challenges in some parts of the country.
According to the statement, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside personnel of the Police and Department of State Services (DSS), monitored the exercise in various locations to ensure compliance with electoral regulations and maintain security.
The party noted that reports received from across the federation showed that voting and affirmation processes were conducted in an orderly manner, while aspirants and supporters displayed maturity and commitment throughout the exercise.
Party stakeholders and observers also commended the NDC for introducing a system that allowed aspirants to participate in the primaries before purchasing nomination forms, describing the arrangement as a significant step toward strengthening internal democracy.
Under the new arrangement introduced by the party, only successful aspirants who emerge from the primaries will proceed to purchase nomination forms.
At many voting centres, supporters were seen chanting solidarity songs and celebrating what they described as a new political direction anchored on inclusiveness and grassroots participation.
The party leadership described the successful conduct of the exercise as a major milestone in the continued growth of the NDC as a national political movement committed to democratic values, credible leadership and national renewal.
The statement added that the National Working Committee of the party would complete the collation of results from the states before making official announcements from the party’s national headquarters.
Political observers believe the large turnout recorded during the primaries may further strengthen the NDC’s momentum as preparations intensify for future electoral contests.
