The Presidency has appointed Mr. Jeffrey Omoh Ozemegwa as Intergovernmental Officer in the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Climate Technology and Operations, a move aimed at strengthening coordination among federal, state and local government institutions on climate-related initiatives across Nigeria.
The appointment, which took immediate effect, was conveyed in a formal letter signed by Olamide Fagbuji, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations.
According to the Presidency, Ozemegwa’s selection was based on the confidence reposed in his competence, experience and capacity to support the office in advancing Nigeria’s climate action priorities, enhancing intergovernmental coordination and accelerating the implementation of strategic climate technology and sustainability initiatives nationwide.
The Presidency stated that in his new role, Ozemegwa will support engagements with Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), state governments, local government authorities, development partners, private sector institutions and multilateral organisations in furtherance of the administration’s climate and green growth agenda.
The appointment is designed to bolster efforts aimed at deepening collaboration among stakeholders involved in climate governance, innovation and sustainable development.
As Intergovernmental Officer, he will support the Office in advancing Nigeria’s climate action priorities, strengthening intergovernmental coordination, and accelerating the implementation of strategic climate technology and sustainability initiatives across the Federation, the formal communication noted.
A detailed job description accompanying the appointment outlines responsibilities that include coordinating climate-related programmes and policies among government institutions, facilitating collaboration between federal and sub-national governments, and strengthening partnerships with state governments and local authorities.
The role will also require active engagement with climate focal persons, governors’ offices, commissioners and local government stakeholders to support the implementation and monitoring of climate resilience and green growth initiatives at the sub-national level.
Additionally, Ozemegwa will be expected to assist in building strategic partnerships with development partners, multilateral organisations, civil society groups, academia and the private sector to mobilise climate finance, technical cooperation and innovation deployment.
The Presidency further indicated that the officer will provide research and policy support on climate governance, energy transition, environmental sustainability, circular economy and green industrialisation, while also contributing to the preparation of policy briefs, reports, presentations and official correspondence.
Part of his mandate will include supporting the tracking of Nigeria’s national climate commitments, including the Energy Transition Plan (ETP), Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and other related frameworks.
The appointment letter clarified that the position is donor-supported and does not constitute an appointment into the Federal Civil Service. It added that remuneration and operational support associated with the role would be funded through approved donor and partner-supported programmes, subject to applicable guidelines and the availability of funds.
The Office expressed confidence that Ozemegwa would discharge his responsibilities with professionalism, integrity and commitment to public service values, while contributing to efforts to strengthen climate governance and intergovernmental collaboration in Nigeria.
Observers say the appointment underscores the growing importance being attached to climate technology, sustainability and coordinated governance mechanisms as Nigeria pursues its climate action and green development objectives.
