….Accuses APC-Led Government of Using Courts to Weaken Opposition, Vows to Resist ‘Political Manipulation’
ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Obidient Movement has accused the Federal Government and the judiciary of orchestrating a political conspiracy aimed at preventing former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, from participating in the 2027 presidential election.
At an emergency press conference in Abuja on Monday, the movement described recent judicial pronouncements concerning the recognition of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party as a dangerous assault on Nigeria’s democracy and judicial independence.
The movement, in the text of the press briefing signed by its National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, alleged that a court judgment seeking to deregister the NDC was politically motivated and designed to cripple opposition forces ahead of the next general election.
According to the group, the legal challenge against the party emerged just days after Peter Obi reportedly joined the NDC, raising suspicions that the move was intended to keep the former Anambra State governor off the ballot in 2027.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this is a hatchet job by the present administration to ensure that our principal, Mr. Peter Obi, is not on the ballot in 2027,” the statement declared.
Judiciary Under Attack
The Obidient Movement alleged that the judiciary was increasingly becoming a tool for partisan interests rather than an impartial arbiter of justice.
“We are completely blunt: the Nigerian judiciary is actively surrendering itself to the dictation and caprices of the APC regime. It is no longer behaving as an impartial guardian of justice,” the statement said.
The movement warned that the erosion of judicial independence could have grave consequences for national stability, insisting that the courts remain the last line of defence between democracy and anarchy.
According to the group, citizens may eventually lose faith in the legal system if the judiciary is perceived to be compromised.
“When you destroy the court of law, you leave the people with only the court of public opinion and the street,” the statement warned.
Fear of Opposition Coalition
The movement further claimed that the ruling establishment was unsettled by the emergence of a broad opposition coalition under the NDC platform.
“The ruling elite is utterly terrified. They see the massive, unstoppable coalition building under the NDC banner and know they cannot win a free and fair contest on the merits of their governance,” it stated.
The group accused the government of deploying state institutions and judicial technicalities to suppress opposition parties before the commencement of electoral activities for 2027.
It also cautioned against attempts to create what it described as a “one-party dictatorship,” insisting that only Nigerians have the constitutional right to determine who governs them.
Call for Democratic Safeguards
The Obidient Movement called on its supporters nationwide to remain calm and focused despite what it termed “deliberate sabotage” and “partisanship” by some institutions.
The group demanded that the Federal Government refrain from using the judiciary to manipulate the democratic process and urged all stakeholders to defend judicial independence and the sanctity of the electoral system.
“We shall defend democracy and protect judicial independence. Justice must prevail and there must be no political manipulation,” the statement said.
Obi-Kwankwaso Ticket Prediction
In one of the strongest declarations of the press conference, the movement predicted that a joint presidential ticket involving Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, would contest and win the 2027 presidential election.
“The joint ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso will be on the ballot in 2027, and we will defeat Tinubu, the APC, INEC, the judiciary and all other state machinery working against a new Nigeria,” the statement asserted.
The group concluded by expressing optimism that a “new Nigeria” would emerge in 2027 despite what it described as efforts to suppress opposition politics.
The latest allegations by the Obidient Movement are expected to intensify political debates over the independence of Nigeria’s judiciary and the emerging alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
