ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced a significant breakthrough in its preparations for the 2027 presidential election, confirming that the names of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have been successfully uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal.
The development comes amid recent legal and political uncertainties surrounding the status of the party and its participation in the 2027 general elections.
The confirmation was made following a strategic meeting in Abuja between the National Leader of the NDC, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and the party’s vice-presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to the party, the successful upload of the candidates’ names demonstrates that the NDC remains firmly in the race for the presidency despite ongoing legal challenges.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the party expressed satisfaction with the progress made, declaring:
“We are pleased to confirm that Senator Kwankwaso’s name has been successfully uploaded on the INEC portal as the Vice Presidential Candidate of the NDC for the 2027 Presidential Election. The party remains focused and committed to the task ahead.”
Sources within the party also indicated that the nomination details of the presidential candidate, Peter Obi, were equally uploaded, effectively placing the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket on the INEC nomination platform ahead of the 2027 polls.
The development is being viewed as a major morale booster for supporters of the opposition coalition, especially after concerns emerged over a recent Federal High Court judgment in Lokoja that questioned the registration status of the NDC and raised fears that the party could be excluded from the electoral process.
In recent days, the NDC had accused INEC of frustrating its participation in the 2027 elections by allegedly denying the party access to the nomination portal. The party’s leadership, however, maintained that it was pursuing legal remedies while continuing with political mobilization across the country.
Speaking after his meeting with Senator Dickson, Kwankwaso said consultations and political engagements across the North-West geopolitical zone had yielded “very encouraging results” and reaffirmed the party’s determination to remain united and focused.
“We remain steadfast, united, and fully focused on the mission ahead,” the former Kano State governor stated.
Political analysts say the successful upload of the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket could reshape the dynamics of the 2027 presidential contest by reinforcing the viability of a broad opposition alliance seeking to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso alliance is widely regarded as one of the most formidable opposition combinations ahead of the 2027 election, bringing together Obi’s substantial support base across the South and urban centres with Kwankwaso’s influential political structure in Kano and much of Northern Nigeria.
Although INEC has yet to issue a formal public statement specifically on the upload of the candidates’ names, the latest development has been interpreted within political circles as a crucial administrative step that keeps the NDC’s presidential aspirations alive pending the final resolution of all legal matters concerning the party.
For supporters of the opposition movement, the successful upload represents more than an administrative exercise—it signals that the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket remains firmly on course for participation in what is already shaping up to be one of Nigeria’s most fiercely contested presidential elections in recent history.
