Abuja, Nigeria — The Deputy National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. (Engr.) Toni Adikibe, on Friday joined the national leadership of the association at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding the Nutrition 774 Initiative across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
Hon. Adikibe, who accompanied ALGON National President, Hon. Engr. Bello Lawal, and other senior local government leaders on the high-level courtesy visit, played a prominent role in discussions focused on strengthening grassroots collaboration to combat malnutrition and promote healthier communities nationwide.
The meeting underscored the strategic importance of local governments in driving the implementation of the Nutrition 774-ALGON Initiative, a flagship programme designed to take nutrition awareness and healthy living campaigns directly to communities across the federation.
Speaking during the engagement, Adikibe applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for championing policies aimed at improving the well-being of Nigerians through sustainable grassroots interventions.
He said the Nutrition 774 Initiative provides local governments with a unique opportunity to leverage their closeness to the people in delivering life-changing nutrition programmes to every household across the country.
“As the tier of government closest to the people, local governments are strategically positioned to ensure that the Nutrition 774 campaign reaches every family and every community,” Adikibe stated.
The ALGON Deputy National President, who also serves as the Executive Chairman of Oru West Local Government Area and ALGON Chairman in Imo State, stressed that effective grassroots mobilisation remains the foundation for achieving the initiative’s objectives.
He noted that local councils, working closely with traditional rulers, women groups, youth organisations and community stakeholders, possess the institutional capacity to ensure the campaign succeeds across all 774 local government areas.
Highlighting efforts in Imo State, Adikibe commended Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma for supporting nutrition-focused interventions through the State Ministry of Health, describing the state’s approach as consistent with the objectives of the national programme.
Describing malnutrition as “a national emergency,” he said Imo State has continued to make measurable progress in advancing food security, nutrition education and healthy living, while pledging that the state would remain at the forefront of efforts to improve public health outcomes.
Reaffirming ALGON’s commitment under the leadership of Hon. Engr. Bello Lawal, Adikibe assured the Federal Government that the association would continue to mobilise council chairmen and grassroots institutions nationwide to drive community ownership of the Nutrition 774 Initiative.
Other ALGON leaders also expressed strong support for the programme and pledged closer collaboration with the Federal Government to ensure that preventable malnutrition is drastically reduced and that every Nigerian child has access to improved nutrition.
The meeting concluded with both the Presidency and ALGON agreeing to deepen their partnership in advancing the Nutrition 774 Initiative as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, with renewed determination to deliver measurable health and nutrition outcomes across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
