BENDE, ABIA STATE — Christian leaders from Bende Local Government Area of Abia State have pledged spiritual support for the Labour Party’s candidate for Bende Federal Constituency, Dr. Chima Anyaso, declaring their commitment to pray for his success in the 2027 House of Representatives election.
The pledge was made during a prayer and solidarity visit by a delegation of pastors drawn from different denominations across the local government area to Dr. Anyaso’s residence in Igbere.
The clerics said their decision to identify with the Labour Party standard-bearer was informed by their desire to see leaders with integrity and a strong commitment to public service emerge in positions of authority.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Rev. Henry Kay of the Assemblies of God Church, Bende, said the Church must become more intentional in influencing the quality of leadership produced through the electoral process.
According to him, the role of the Church should extend beyond offering prayers to actively supporting individuals it believes possess the values and vision needed to advance the common good.
“It is time for the Church to gather and build with bricks, no longer stones. We have come to pray and cry unto God on his behalf. There is no way the Church will continually pray for a man and God will not cause him to excel,” he said.
The coordinator of the pastors’ group, Rev. Ibe Uduma, explained that the prayer visit formed part of a broader effort by ministers in the area to promote responsible and God-fearing leadership in Bende Federal Constituency.
He assured Dr. Anyaso of the clergy’s continued intercession and moral support throughout the political process, expressing confidence that divine guidance would accompany his aspirations.
Responding, Dr. Anyaso expressed gratitude to the ministers for what he described as their consistent prayers and encouragement over the past year.
He disclosed that the relationship between him and the clerics predated the Labour Party’s primary election, noting that they had consistently assured him of their spiritual backing even before he emerged as the party’s candidate.
“This didn’t start today. For over one year, these pastors have been praying for me. Even before the primaries, they said I was the one they would support in prayers to emerge,” he said.
The Labour Party candidate pledged to uphold the trust reposed in him by the Church and the people of Bende if elected to represent the constituency in the House of Representatives.
He assured the delegation that his focus would remain on effective representation, people-centred legislation and initiatives that would improve the welfare of constituents.
“I will not disappoint the Church. Those who seek to take what belongs to God should know that God will not remain silent,” he added.
The visit comes as political consultations and grassroots engagements continue to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the contest for the Bende Federal Constituency seat expected to attract significant attention in Abia State.
Observers say the endorsement by religious leaders underscores the growing involvement of faith-based organisations in conversations around leadership, governance and civic participation, as political actors continue to seek support from critical stakeholders across the constituency.
