The weight of history and the promise of renewal converged in Abuja on Thursday, 15th October, 2026, when the supreme organ of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, convened its General Assembly in strict compliance with constitutional provisions, and the gathering which was meant to be statutory became spectacular with the entrance of His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Dr. Hope Uzodimma, Executive Governor of Imo State.
Governor Uzodimma, who is also Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Secretary of the APC Campaign Council, graced the Assembly as Special Guest of Honour.
This was according to a press release signed by the Media Office of Hon. Ikenna Toni Adikibe, the Deputy National President of ALGON.
Uzodimma Did Not Merely Attend, He Validated It — Adikibe
Speaking in reciprocation of the honour done to the Association by the Governor’s presence, the Deputy National President of ALGON, Hon. Ikenna Toni Adikibe, who is Chairman of the Constitution Amendments Planning Committee, Chairman of the General Assembly Planning Committee, Executive Chairman of Oru West Local Government Area and ALGON State Chairman, Imo State, described Governor Uzodimma’s attendance as the definitive turning point of the entire event.
Hon. Adikibe, visibly moved by Governor’s statesmanship, thanked him for his leadership across numerous fronts and celebrated him as a quintessential grassroots man who has continued to balance enormous demands of high office with uncommon passion for last mile success.
“Governor Uzodimma did not merely attend the Assembly, he validated it, and his message rekindled the soul of local government administration in Nigeria,” Adikibe stated.
He noted that the Governor has ensured governance does not end at state capital but cascades to very bottom of the pyramid where people live.
FG Committed To Grassroots Governance, Autonomy — Uzodimma
Accompanied by the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, Governor Uzodimma reaffirmed Federal Government’s commitment to grassroots governance, declaring that effective local government administration remains the fulcrum for translating policy into tangible democratic dividends.
He said the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is deliberately designed to cascade to third tier, pledging unflinching support of Mr. President on issues of autonomy, institutional strengthening and fiscal viability.
The Association, through Hon. Adikibe, expressed profound appreciation to Mr. President through the Governor, pledging to operationalize the Renewed Hope vision across the 774 Local Government Areas.
Historic Composition, Far-Reaching Resolutions
The 2026 General Assembly, which deliberated on critical inhibitors to effective functionality of Association, was historic in its composition and resolutions.
It comprised the National Excos, the 36 States and FCT ALGON Chairmen, three Local Government Chairmen drawn from each State and FCT, national leadership and 36 States and FCT Coordinators of Vice Chairmen Forum, and national leadership and 36 States and FCT leaders of Councillors Forum, alongside four former ALGON National Presidents — Hon. Ibrahim Jalo Dasuki, Hon. Felix Akabue, ALGON Emeritus Hon. Alabi Kolade David and immediate past President Hon. Aminu Muazu Maifata represented by Secretary to Government of Nasarawa State, Barr. Labaran Shuaibu Magaji, SAN.
Also present were Chairman Board of Trustees, Chief Hon. Odunayo Ategbero, BoT members from geopolitical zones, former and serving Director General of NAPTIP, Hajiya Binta Bello, Lead Consultant, Senator Dr. Alphonsus Ubanesse Igbeke, members of media, civil society, development partners and Director General, Evan Enekwe, while also witnessing emotional reunification of erstwhile factional promoter, Hon. Abubakar Mohammed, into progressive and indivisible umbrella body of 774 Councils.
In its far-reaching decisions, Assembly resolved to reconstitute its Board of Trustees following gaps created by demise of some members, emphasized urgent need for Local Governments as only government at bottom of pyramid to build institutional capacity to reclaim its rightful place, approved rebranding of administrative head from Secretary General to Director General to strengthen efficiency, considered and approved Annual Budgets and adopted reports of Principal Officers.
Most crucially, motions for constitutional amendment distilled after months of interrogation by National Executive Council were presented and carried not by simple majority but by absolute majority of members of General Assembly, thereby conferring unassailable authenticity on reforms.
Hon. Adikibe noted that Assembly has reaffirmed collective commitment to deepening grassroots governance, and that presence of Governor Uzodimma has provided moral and political tonic needed to drive new ALGON into era of constitutional compliance, institutional rebirth and service to Nigerian people.
