The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Hon. Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, has presented the state’s local government development model at the 2026 ALGON General Assembly in Abuja, highlighting reported progress in grassroots infrastructure, healthcare, education, youth empowerment and security.
Udo, who is also the Executive Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, made the presentation on Thursday, October 15, 2026, while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the annual gathering of local government leaders.
He attributed the reported transformation across the state’s 31 local government areas to what he described as the purposeful leadership and development-oriented programmes of Governor Umo Eno.
According to him, the state has recorded progress in road and bridge construction, healthcare delivery, educational infrastructure, job creation, economic empowerment, gender responsiveness, security and youth engagement.
The ALGON chairman said the decision to showcase Akwa Ibom’s experience at the national assembly followed growing interest from fellow local government chairmen and other stakeholders seeking to understand the state’s approach to grassroots governance and service delivery.
He urged local government leaders across the country to adopt practices that promote cooperation between council chairmen, state governors and local communities, stressing that development priorities should be informed by the needs of the people.
“The Governor, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno, has been ambitious and intentional. His programmes are disruptive with evidence-based results that all Akwa Ibom people are benefitting from. That is the template we are sharing,” Udo said.
He explained that the state’s approach was anchored on inclusive governance, mutually beneficial partnerships and coordinated efforts to ensure that democratic dividends reach communities across the local government areas.
Udo maintained that effective collaboration between state and local governments was essential to improving service delivery at the grassroots, urging his colleagues to embrace practices that could strengthen accountability, inclusiveness and development outcomes.
The 2026 ALGON General Assembly, he noted, provided an important platform for local government leaders to assess their performance, discuss common challenges and exchange ideas on improving the third tier of government.
He commended ALGON National President, Hon. Engr. Bello Lawal, alongside the association’s leadership and members, for sustaining the annual gathering, which he described as an opportunity to review progress, address concerns and identify practical solutions to challenges facing local councils.
The Akwa Ibom ALGON chairman also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s interest in strengthening grassroots governance, noting the importance of support from the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and cooperation among the different levels of government.
He said Akwa Ibom had witnessed improvements in day-to-day governance under the current administration and expressed hope that the gains would be sustained.
Udo further appreciated the General Assembly’s planning committee, the National Executive Committee, the National Executive Council, members of the Board of Trustees, former ALGON national presidents, councillors, civil society organisations and other stakeholders for their contributions to the event.
He pledged the continued commitment of Akwa Ibom local government chairmen, both those present at the assembly and their colleagues at home, to strengthening service delivery, promoting best practices and improving governance standards across the state.
Akwa Ibom State has 31 local government areas: Abak, Eastern Obolo, Eket, Esit Eket, Essien Udim, Etim Ekpo, Etinan, Ibeno, Ibesikpo Asutan, Ibiono Ibom, Ika, Ikono, Ikot Abasi, Ikot Ekpene, Ini, Itu, Mbo, Mkpat Enin, Nsit Atai, Nsit Ibom, Nsit Ubium, Obot Akara, Okobo, Onna, Oron, Oruk Anam, Udung Uko, Ukanafun, Uruan, Urue-Offong/Oruko and Uyo.
The presentation placed the spotlight on Akwa Ibom’s experience as a case study for discussions on local government administration, intergovernmental cooperation and the delivery of democratic dividends to communities across Nigeria.
