Kalu’s Embarrassment in Aba Should Be a Lesson: A Hindsight of Things to Come

What happened to Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu in Aba yesterday should serve as a serious lesson, and a hindsight of things to come in 2027.

Kalu came to the Item Cultural Festival to sell his third term ambition and to sell President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a people who have already made up their minds. He left with embarrassment and he was disgraced out of stage.

While he was on stage, the crowd revolted. They did not want to hear about APC. They did not want to hear about a third term. They shouted “Ofuji! Ofuji! Ofuji!” for Dr. Chima Anyaso, his opponent, who was unavoidably absent but whose glory was everywhere, so the mantra ‘Oga Adi Ka Oluebube’ is not just a slogan but a prayer and affirmation.

That is the power of the will of the people.

Instead of reading the mood of the people, Kalu resorted to arrogance. He accused the Item people in their own gathering of being strangers. That single statement exposed everything that is wrong with his politics: pride, disconnection, and contempt for the very people he claims to represent.

Let it be clear: APC has been rejected in Igboland. The people have seen through the propaganda. They have seen through the promises. They have seen through the money politics. And Kalu’s arrogance has only made it worse.

Chima Anyaso was not even present, yet his name filled the arena. Remember, “Oga Di Ka Oluebube” — the glory of a man speaks even in his absence. That is what happened in Aba.

In 2027, the will of the people will defeat money power. No amount of federal might, no amount of sharing, no amount of intimidation can stop a people who have decided to take back their destiny.

Kalu broke a covenant, an agreement with the people of Bende. He promised one term and turned around to seek a third. The people have not forgotten. Aba was just a warning.

If he is wise, he will learn from yesterday. If he continues in arrogance, 2027 will be worse.

Bende has spoken. Item has spoken. Abia has spoken.
