Nigerians have called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami.
The call grew louder after President Bola Tinubu’s suspended Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The Street Reporters Newspaper recalls that on Wednesday, Tinubu suspended Bawa to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office.
Bawa’s suspension was contained in a terse statement by Willie Basse, Director, Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
The EFCC Chairman was accused of abuse of office.
The statement reads: “Mr Bawa has been directed to immediately handover the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations, in the Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation.”
However, Nigerians have said that Malami should be the next as Tinubu starts cleaning the Augean stable.
They accused several other appointees of former President Muhammadu Buhari of corruption.
Taking to their Twitter handles, some Nigerians wrote: @shehu_mahdi: “ARREST MALAMI OR RELEASE BAWA BECAUSE: He nominated him. He supervised him. He is the cabal at the centre. He has a tie with Failed PMB. He prosecuted selectively. He discharged & acquitted at will. He became DEBT collector. He negotiated & huge government debt.
“He paid those debts exclusively. He needs to explain how he suddenly became mercilessly rich. He needs to explain the $2.8B crude oil stolen whose details are fully known to him. He ignored several court orders. He holds the judiciary in contempt. He must not be above the law.”
Another Nigerian wrote: “But they need to arrest Malami, because he is the genesis of all the criminal and corrupt act done by BAWA, he used BAWA, the way Buhari used Emefele, but I know @officialABAT can’t arrest Malami”.
Another comment read “Malami should be the first on the list I don’t know what is happening”.
Another wrote “Throughout Buhari’s tenure, Malami didn’t seem to understand this idea that loyalty is national, not personal. He was too loyal to Buhari to the detriment of our judicial system and the nation at large.”
