Unemployed Persons: NDE Kicks-off Youth Transformation Training Scheme in Oyo

Determined to combat the menace of unemployment in Nigeria, the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has flagged-off the second phase of the Youth Transformation Training Scheme (YTTS) in Technical and Vocational Skills for 25 unemployed persons in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Speaking at the flagged-off/orientation ceremony at NDE Skill Acquisition Centre, Apampa in Ibadan, the state capital, the NDE Director General, Mallam Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo, assured that the agency will continue to execute laudable schemes to check the rising spate of unemployment in the country.

The Director General, who was represented at the event by the Acting State Coordinator, NDE Oyo State, Mrs Steve-Ogundipe Olayinka, explained that YTTS Scheme, as an initiative of NDE’s Vocational Skills Department (VSD), was aimed at impacting demand-driven skills on unemployed persons to enable them become skilled and proficient enough to earn a living and contribute positively towards the economic growth of the country. The Director General noted that following the successful implementation of the YTTS scheme in Technical and Vocational skills for 1,850 persons across the 36 states and the FCT, the agency received approval to train another set of Eight Hundred and Sixteen (816) trainees to replace the graduated ones across the 36 states and the FCT.

The NDE boss who congratulated the beneficiaries however warned that the training scheme would be strictly monitored by the VSD headquarters officers, Zonal and the state counterparts to ensure compliance to the implementation guidelines and quality training service delivery.

He therefore, appealed to the YTTS trainees to ensure that they effectively utilize the rare opportunity provided by the Federal Government to acquire the needed demand driven skills that would transform the conutry’s economic fortune. Also speaking, the Director, Vocational Skills Department, Mallam Isa Abdu, who was represented by Mr. Igwesi Onyekwelu, futher explained that In Oyo State, the selected Twenty – five (25) unemployed persons would undergo training in four skill sets namely Aluminium, 5, Leathers Works 6, Hairdressing 4, and Computer 10.

He commended the Federal Government for its various efforts aimed at implementing laudable schemes designed to generate employment among the teeming unemployed persons in the country.

He pointed out that measures such as the YTTS scheme has been creating wealth across the various parts of the country.

The head of VSD department, NDE Oyo State, Mrs. Hilda Lawani, who was represented by Engr. Oki Ibrahim, assured that as a pacesetter state, the NDE Oyo have sourced for proficient and competent instructors/ trainers in different skills sets to impact the needed trendy skills in the trainees. He added that the state equally have gone a step further to ensure that the selected skill sets are within the duration of six to eighteen months (6-18) months.
“Already in Oyo State, the 25 selected trainees made up of women and youths have been posted to various qualified trainers/ instructors for the training scheme. We have also put in place incentives for our trainees and trainers.”

She commended the trainees for their perseverance and commitment to acquire useful skills and advised them not to relent in the fight against poverty and unemployment adding that to achieve the goal, the trainers/trainees must strive harder to function well in their respective training.
