Akpata Embraced Tradition, Oba of Benin Distinguished Heritage from Lineage – Says Campaign Council
The Olu Akpata Campaign Council has released a statement, through its spokesman Tony Akeni Le Moin, addressing a recent incident at the Palace of the Oba of Benin regarding Labour Party Governorship candidate Olumide Akpata.
Contrary to reports claiming that Oba Ewuare II denied Akpata’s connection to the Palace, the statement clarified that the Oba acknowledged Akpata as an “illustrious son of Benin kingdom,” while also highlighting the importance of distinguishing between cultural pride and biological descent.
“A heart that is sorry God will in no way turn away,” quoted Le Moin, referencing Psalm 51:7 to illustrate the gracious exchange between Akpata and the Oba during their meeting on June 15, 2024. The Labour Party candidate’s metaphorical speech, which referred to himself as a “son of the Palace,” was interpreted by the Monarch as an expression of shared heritage among Benin people.
Akpata’s acceptance of this clarification was praised by the Campaign Council as a testament to his humility and respect for Benin’s cultural legacy.
The Council criticized attempts by political adversaries to exploit the incident, stating that such actions would not deter Akpata’s campaign.
It added that with blessings from the Oba and support from Edo citizens, Akpata’s journey towards the Governorship election remains hopeful.
The statement concluded with a vibrant affirmation of Edo state’s future and respect for its Monarch, encapsulated in the traditional exclamation “OBA GHAT’OKPE, ISE!”
