In a dramatic turn of events, Arik Air’s fleet has been grounded by Nigerian aviation authorities due to a longstanding debt of $2.5 million owed to Atlas Petroleum International Ltd.
The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) enforced the court order, attaching Arik’s aircraft and giving the airline a notice of public auction if the debt is not paid by July 26, 2024.
Despite Arik’s appeals to higher courts, the Supreme Court ruled against the airline, leading to the enforcement of the debt.
NAMA has grounded the aircraft to preserve the subject matter of the dispute and prevent further execution of the court order.
The agency urged the parties to resolve their issues quickly, allowing Arik’s aircraft to resume flight operations.
The move has significant implications for Arik Air’s operations and passengers, highlighting the importance of resolving the debt dispute promptly.
