In a bid to address the worsening state of Nigeria, a delegation of eminent patriots led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations, met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Friday.
The meeting, attended by top government officials, aimed to find solutions to the country’s instability, insecurity, and economic challenges.
Chief Anyaoku, leader of the delegation, emphasized the need for national healing and reconciliation through a profound process of dialogue.
The Patriots, a group of national leaders of thought, urged the government to initiate an urgent dialogue with leaders of nationwide protests and refrain from using lethal weapons on protesters.
The delegation stressed that a democratic people’s constitution, achieved through a national constitutional dialogue and an elected National Constituent Assembly, is essential for Nigeria’s progress and stability.
They advised President Tinubu to prioritize political reforms, incorporating recommendations from previous constitutional conferences, to bring Nigerians together and address the root causes of insecurity and instability.
The Patriots attributed the growing incidents of terrorism, banditry, cattle rustling, separatist agitations, and kidnappings to political distrust and national incohesion.
They emphasized that economic policies and reforms cannot yield positive results without addressing these underlying issues.
To address the current nationwide hunger protests, the delegation urged President Tinubu to direct the government to engage in dialogue with protest leaders and avoid using lethal weapons to manage the protests.
The meeting was attended by prominent Nigerians, including Senator Ben Obi, Chief Simon Okeke, Madam Pauline Tallen, Dr. Pogu Bitrus, and HE Labaran Maku, among others.
The Patriots’ delegation represented various regions of Nigeria, demonstrating a united commitment to finding solutions to the country’s challenges.
The Patriots’ meeting with President Tinubu highlighted the urgent need for national dialogue, constitutional reform, and political reforms to address Nigeria’s instability, insecurity, and economic challenges.
The delegation’s recommendations offer a roadmap for the government to prioritize the needs of Nigerians and work towards a more stable and prosperous future.
