Sokoto Accidental Military ‘Multiple Airstrike’ Tragedy Sparks Outrage
A devastating military airstrike on Christmas Day has left at least 10 civilians dead and many more injured in Sokoto State’s Silame Local Government Area.
The victims, mostly peasant farmers, were buried by residents who described the incident as a “multiple airstrike” that caused widespread destruction.
The airstrike, which targeted suspected Lakurawa terrorists, also killed dozens of livestock and burnt several food silos and houses in Gidan Sanma and Rumtuwa villages.
Survivors recounted the horror of the attack, with one resident saying, “It’s multiple airstrikes. The big one fell here, causing heavy destruction which affected our houses and food silos.”
According to eyewitnesses, nine victims died instantly, while the tenth succumbed to injuries later. Many residents have been displaced as a result of the attack, which has left the community in a state of shock and grief.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reacted to the incident, stating that the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence and surveillance, targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group.
NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, acknowledged reports of civilian casualties and promised that the NAF would thoroughly investigate the incident.
However, the military’s explanation has done little to assuage the anger and grief of the affected communities.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu has demanded an investigation into the incident, expressing his deep sadness over the avoidable loss of life.
In a statement, Governor Aliyu extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that I address you following the tragic incident in the communities of Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa in the Silame Local Government Area.
“This heartbreaking event, caused by an accidental misfire from the Nigerian Army, has claimed the lives of innocent citizens and left several others injured”, Governor Aliyu said.
The governor has also directed a donation of N20 million and 100 bags of assorted food items to support the affected families. He urged residents to remain calm and pray for peace in the state and nation.
The incident has sparked outrage, with many calling for accountability and measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The state government has pledged to engage with relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
As the investigation into the incident begins, questions are being raised about the military’s intelligence gathering and targeting procedures.
The incident has also highlighted the need for greater transparency and accountability in military operations, particularly in areas where civilians are present.
The Sokoto airstrike tragedy is a sobering reminder of the human cost of military blunders and the need for greater caution and precision in military operations.
As the families of the victims mourn their loved ones, the nation must come together to demand justice and accountability for this avoidable tragedy.
