On Sunday, Pope Francis made his first public appearance in over five weeks, emerging from Rome’s Gemelli hospital after a prolonged battle with pneumonia. The Argentine pontiff, visibly fatigued but determined, greeted well-wishers and expressed his gratitude before returning home.
Seated in a wheelchair on one of the hospital’s balconies, Pope Francis addressed the crowd gathered below. Hundreds of faithful supporters had come to show their love and prayers for the 86-year-old leader of the Catholic Church during his recovery. With a soft wave and occasional thumbs-up, the pope conveyed his appreciation to those present.
“Thank you, everyone,” Francis said weakly, his voice amplified through a microphone. Despite his frailty, he managed moments of warmth, including a smile and a playful acknowledgment of a woman in the crowd holding yellow flowers: “I can see that woman with yellow flowers, well done,” he remarked, sparking laughter and lightheartedness among the attendees.
Pope Francis’s hospitalization began on February 14, when he was admitted with breathing difficulties that later developed into pneumonia. This public sighting marked the end of his stay at the hospital, as he was officially discharged moments after addressing the crowd.
While his health continues to be closely monitored, the pope’s brief appearance and heartfelt gestures reaffirm his enduring connection with the Catholic community worldwide.
