Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who served as Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has reportedly tendered his resignation.
Reliable sources in the know revealed that Baba-Ahmed’s resignation was submitted approximately two weeks ago, though details about the motivations behind his decision remain unspecified. The resignation, which is said to be on personal grounds, has yet to be formally accepted by the presidency.
Appointed to the role in September 2023, Dr. Baba-Ahmed operated within the Office of Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Throughout his tenure, he actively represented the presidency at various public platforms, including a notable conference on strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and governance held in January 2025.
His time in office was not without controversy. Baba-Ahmed faced criticism from Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Mohammed Matawalle, over his affiliation with the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and the group’s political stance.
In April 2024, tensions arose after NEF described the North’s support for Tinubu in the 2023 elections as a “mistake.” Baba-Ahmed defended NEF’s position, arguing that the administration would benefit from highlighting the achievements of northern appointees rather than dismissing the group’s statements.
In response, Matawalle emphasized that appointees like Baba-Ahmed bore the responsibility of promoting and defending the administration’s successes, warning against silence amidst criticism.
Despite these challenges, Baba-Ahmed’s resignation has sparked discussions about its potential implications for the presidency and his role as an advocate for northern interests.
A seasoned public servant and elder statesman, Baba-Ahmed has held various high-ranking positions in government, including Permanent Secretary and Secretary to INEC. He is widely respected for his reform-driven approach to public service.
