Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, is earning praise for fulfilling long-abandoned infrastructure promises with the ongoing construction of the Opete Road in Udu Local Government Area — a project left untouched for decades.
During a project inspection on Saturday, the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, hailed the 4.5-kilometre road as a “signature project” of the Oborevwori administration, stating it reflects the Governor’s commitment to equitable development across the state.
“This is one project that has lingered for as long as the state has existed, but nobody had the courage to do what Governor Oborevwori is doing here right now,” Izeze said, pointing to the stretch currently undergoing asphalting.
He disclosed that 2.3 kilometres of the road have already received the binder course of asphalt, while deeper excavation work continues on other sections. “Where we are standing is about 2.4 km and if you observe the depth of excavation, it is almost a meter to the drains. The quality of work is commendable and progressing according to the approved timeline,” the commissioner noted.
The project, valued at approximately N7 billion, is one of the most capital-intensive rural interventions by the current administration due to the challenging terrain. According to Izeze, its completion will drastically improve connectivity, enhance mobility, and boost local commerce in the region.
He acknowledged the longstanding difficulties faced by the residents of Opete community and applauded Governor Oborevwori for “taking the bull by the horns,” while urging community members to strike a balance between demanding more and appreciating what has been achieved.
“The people of Udu are full of praises for the Governor. His Excellency has not neglected Udu. In fact, this is another evidence that he is indeed working,” Izeze affirmed.
He added: “The people of Udu have a right to demand more, like Oliver Twist, but they must not give the impression that nothing is happening. Udu is receiving adequate attention even though more is needed.”
Contractor and Director of Roadwell Construction, Milad Boutros Chaghoury, provided further assurance on the project’s delivery timeline. “We are planning to finish digging and filling by the end of this month, and lay the stone base and binder course. Hopefully, by the first week of August, the entire stretch will be ready by the end of August or September,” he said.
The residents, who have endured decades of hardship due to the poor state of the road, expressed excitement over the pace and quality of work. Many described the development as a dream come true and lauded Oborevwori’s administration for turning words into action.
Once completed, the Opete Road project is expected to transform the transport landscape in Udu, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic activities in surrounding communities, marking a major milestone in Delta State’s infrastructure drive.
