BARCELONA, SPAIN — Barcelona have reached an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of Spain international and 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, bringing an end to weeks of negotiations over the future of one of Europe’s most accomplished midfielders.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano broke the news on Sunday with his trademark “Here we go” confirmation, reporting that Manchester City had given the green light to Barcelona’s latest proposal for the 30-year-old midfielder.
Romano said the agreement is in place for Rodri to join the Catalan giants, describing the deal as “all done” for the former Ballon d’Or winner. His report was subsequently backed by multiple major football outlets, including Reuters and Sky Sports.
The development represents a dramatic conclusion to a transfer saga that had seen Barcelona submit successive offers for the Spanish international after Manchester City rejected an initial proposal earlier in the month.
According to reports, the final package is worth up to €76.5 million, comprising an initial guaranteed payment of around €60 million and additional performance-related payments. The Athletic’s David Ornstein, whose figures were reported alongside Romano’s confirmation, said the structure could see Manchester City receive at least €71.5 million if the achievable bonuses are triggered.

City Give Green Light After Protracted Negotiations
The breakthrough follows a series of negotiations between the Premier League champions and Barcelona, with City’s valuation of Rodri initially proving too high for the Spanish club.
Manchester City had rejected Barcelona’s first offer, reportedly worth about £40 million, with the English club seeking a substantially higher fee for a player who remained central to its midfield plans. Sky Sports reported earlier in August that City wanted more than £60 million for Rodri, who had entered the final year of his contract.
Barcelona subsequently returned with improved proposals and eventually succeeded in persuading City to sanction the move.
Reuters reported on Sunday that Manchester City had accepted a bid worth approximately £65.4 million ($88.47 million) for Rodri, while the player had agreed to a four-year contract with Barcelona. The news agency added that the transfer was expected to be finalised in the coming week.
The Guardian similarly reported that City had accepted Barcelona’s £65.4 million offer, describing Rodri as set to complete his return to Spanish football after seven seasons in England.
Four-Year Barcelona Contract
Rodri is expected to sign a four-year contract that will keep him at Barcelona until June 2030.
Goal, citing Romano’s latest information, reported that Barcelona had already begun preparations for the midfielder’s medical examinations and travel arrangements, with the formalities expected to precede his presentation as a Barcelona player. 
The agreement will bring the Spain captain back to La Liga, where he began his senior career before establishing himself as one of the world’s outstanding defensive midfielders.
Rodri joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for a then club-record fee of £62.8 million. During his seven-year spell at the Etihad Stadium, he became a pivotal figure in one of the most successful periods in City’s history.

Reuters reports that he made 298 appearances for City and won 12 major honours, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and the UEFA Champions League.

Barcelona’s capture of Rodri is also significant because the midfielder had attracted interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Madrid had reportedly regarded Rodri as a major target, but Barcelona eventually emerged as his preferred destination. Reports indicate that the midfielder favoured a return to Catalonia as negotiations intensified between Barcelona and Manchester City.

While the transfer represents a major coup for Barcelona, Rodri’s departure constitutes a significant challenge for Manchester City.
