Distinguished Senator Alphonsus Ubanesse Igbeke and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, have reaffirmed the importance of grassroots development and effective local governance during the 2026 General Assembly of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Abuja.
The two leaders exchanged pleasantries on the sidelines of the Assembly held on Thursday, in an interaction that underscored the need for unity, cooperation and stronger collaboration among stakeholders in Nigeria’s local government system.
Senator Ubanesse, who attended the statutory gathering of chairmen of the 774 local government councils, was among the dignitaries who participated in the event, which brought together local government officials and other key stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting grassroots administration.
The engagement between Ubanesse and Uzodimma also highlighted their shared commitment to ensuring that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu translates into tangible development and improved living conditions for Nigerians at the grassroots.
Ubanesse, a former senator and philanthropist with more than three decades of leadership experience, has distinguished himself through interventions in education, empowerment and other areas of human development.
His philanthropic activities, particularly scholarship awards and empowerment initiatives, have contributed to improving the living standards of beneficiaries and supporting development across his senatorial zone and other parts of the country.
Beyond his philanthropic engagements, Ubanesse serves as Lead Financial Consultant to ALGON and Chairman of the National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP)/ALGON Technical Working Group.
In these capacities, he has continued to advocate the nationwide deployment of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) infrastructure across the 774 local government areas.
The initiative is aimed at expanding access to cleaner energy, promoting grassroots economic opportunities and supporting sustainable development across communities.
Governor Uzodimma, who attended the Assembly as Special Guest, had earlier reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that national policies and programmes deliver measurable benefits at the local government level.
He stressed the importance of effective local governance in translating government policies into practical outcomes through improved service delivery, policy implementation and inclusive development.
The Assembly also provided a platform for stakeholders to examine strategic issues concerning the administration and future of the local government system, including proposed constitutional amendments intended to align the framework with contemporary governance realities.
Participants included ALGON national executives, chairmen of local government councils from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, members of the leadership of the Vice Chairmen and Councillors Forum, and other stakeholders in grassroots administration.
The gathering underscored the importance of collaboration among federal, state and local government institutions in advancing development and strengthening governance at the community level.
