ABUJA, NIGERIA — National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, has congratulated Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, on his victory in the state governorship election, urging his opponents to put politics aside and support efforts to advance the state.
Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, secured 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.
The result gave Adeleke a winning margin of 66,252 votes, with the governor-elect recording victories in 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won in 11.
Reacting to the outcome in a statement issued on Sunday, Dickson described Adeleke’s victory as significant not only for the governor and the people of Osun State but also for Nigeria’s democratic development.
The former Bayelsa State governor said the election had demonstrated that citizens could still assert their political choices through the ballot despite the challenges confronting the country’s democratic process.
“I warmly congratulate the Governor of Osun State, His Excellency Senator Ademola Adeleke, on his victory in the Osun State Governorship Election,” Dickson stated.
He commended the people of Osun State for what he described as their steadfast defence of their democratic choice, stressing that the outcome was a reminder of the power of the electorate in determining who governs them.
According to him, the election should not be viewed solely as a contest between political parties and candidates but as an opportunity to strengthen democratic values and promote good governance.
“This victory is significant not only for Governor Adeleke and the people of Osun State, but also for our democracy. It is a powerful reminder that, even in an increasingly challenging political environment, the people can still assert their democratic will through the ballot,” he said.
Dickson also appealed to all candidates who contested the election but did not emerge victorious to accept the outcome in the spirit of sportsmanship and contribute to the development of the state.
He urged Adeleke’s opponents and their supporters to join hands with the governor and work collectively toward peace, stability and development across Osun State.
“I commend the people of Osun State for standing firm in defence of their democratic choice and call on all those who contested the election and emerged on the losing side to join hands with the Governor in the spirit of sportsmanship and work for the peace and development of Osun State,” Dickson added.
The NDC leader’s appeal comes as attention shifts from the electoral contest to governance and the need for political stakeholders to support stability and development in the state.
