A civil society organisation, the Coalition for Women in Governance, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress to urgently address allegations of irregularities that reportedly marred the party’s House of Representatives primaries conducted nationwide on Saturday.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the coalition’s president, Ambassador Zainab Mohammed, expressed concern over reports that some of the primaries were allegedly manipulated and failed to reflect the transparent direct primary process earlier advocated by the President.
According to her, the exercise in certain constituencies was allegedly influenced by entrenched political interests, thereby denying ordinary party members and citizens the opportunity to freely choose their preferred candidates.
Mohammed said the reported developments had raised serious questions about internal democracy, transparency, fairness, and respect for the voices of grassroots party members across the country.
She noted that millions of Nigerians who believed in participatory governance were becoming increasingly worried that political influence and imposition could weaken public confidence in the nation’s democratic and electoral systems.
The coalition maintained that democracy can only flourish when citizens are allowed to determine who represents them at all levels of government without interference from powerful political actors.
The group further urged the APC national leadership and relevant stakeholders to take immediate steps to investigate the complaints and restore confidence in the party’s democratic processes.
Mohammed stressed that Nigerians embraced the Renewed Hope agenda on the promise of inclusion, accountability, and fairness, adding that such ideals could only be sustained when the voices of the people are respected and allowed to prevail.
