The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on Tuesday appeared at the national headquarters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja for the party’s presidential screening exercise ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi, regarded by many political observers as a frontrunner in the race for the party’s presidential ticket, arrived at the venue at about 6:45 p.m. clad in his trademark black kaftan and cap, drawing attention from party officials, supporters and members of the media gathered at the secretariat.
The former presidential candidate was accompanied by Senator Victor Umeh and members of his political team. Shortly after his arrival, his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms were formally submitted through an aide as part of the screening process.
Obi’s appearance came moments after the chairman of the screening committee, Sam Egwu, arrived at the venue to oversee the exercise involving aspirants seeking various elective offices under the platform of the party.
Political discussions surrounding Obi’s ambition have intensified in recent days following the party’s controversial decision to halt the sale of presidential nomination forms while extending deadlines for other categories of aspirants. The development has fueled speculations within political circles that the former Anambra governor may emerge as a consensus candidate for the opposition party ahead of the 2027 polls.
However, both Obi’s associates and the leadership of the NDC have continued to dismiss claims of any pre-arranged consensus arrangement, insisting that the party remains committed to a transparent and democratic selection process.
The NDC had earlier constituted a 17-member screening committee to conduct the screening of aspirants contesting presidential, governorship, National Assembly and other elective positions as preparations gather momentum for the next general election.
