ENUGU, NIGERIA — The President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Signature Communications Limited, owners of Signature Television, Ebubedike VinMartin Obiora Ilo, has resigned from his position with immediate effect following his appointment as Chief Technical Adviser to the National Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The development was announced by the Board of Signature Communications Limited in a statement dated September 1, 2026, explaining that Ilo’s decision was prompted by the need to maintain a clear separation between partisan political engagement and the management and editorial operations of the television station.
According to the Board, “Ilo’s decision follows his appointment as Chief Technical Adviser to the National Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.”
The Board said the decision reflected its “commitment to maintaining a clear separation between partisan political engagement and the management and editorial operations of Signature Television.”
It explained that, given the political nature of his new assignment, Ilo considered it appropriate to withdraw from the day-to-day running and editorial direction of the station.
“Given the political nature of his new assignment, he considered it appropriate to step away from the day to day management and editorial direction of the television station to avoid any actual or perceived conflict of interest and to safeguard the professional and editorial independence of Signature Television,” the statement said.
Despite his resignation as chief executive, Ilo will retain his ownership interest in the company.
The Board clarified that “Mr. Ilo remains a shareholder of Signature Communications Limited but will have no role in the day to day management or editorial decision making of Signature TV while he holds the partisan political appointment.”

Veteran Broadcaster Okere Takes Over
To ensure continuity, the Board has appointed veteran journalist, broadcaster and media executive, Dr. Ken Ike Okere, as Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of Signature Communications Limited.
The Board described Okere as an experienced media professional with more than two decades of experience spanning print, radio, television, digital media and corporate communications.
He previously served as Director of Corporate Development and Communications at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Director of Radio Nigeria Lagos, where he supervised Metro FM, Radio One and Bond FM, Zonal Director of Radio Nigeria South East, and Director of the National Broadcast Academy, Lagos.
His earlier career also included working as a producer with Plateau Radio Television and as a journalist and editor in the United States. He is currently Rector of the West Africa Broadcast & Media Academy (WABMA).
The Board expressed confidence that Okere’s extensive professional background would provide stability during the leadership transition.
It said, “Dr. Okere brings more than two decades of experience across print, radio, television, digital media and corporate communications.”
The Board further expressed confidence that “Dr. Okere’s experience in journalism, broadcasting, media management, digital media and professional training will provide continuity and strong professional leadership during the transition.”
Signature TV Reaffirms Editorial Independence
The leadership change comes as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, a period expected to generate heightened political activity and intense public debate.
Against that backdrop, Signature Television said it would continue to maintain its professional and editorial standards and provide coverage of political developments without compromising its independence.
The Board stated that “Signature Television remains committed to providing a platform for diverse views and to reporting political, economic and public affairs issues fairly and professionally, in keeping with established journalistic standards.”
It also sought to reassure the station’s various stakeholders that Ilo’s departure from executive management would not affect its editorial direction.
“The Board assures viewers, staff, advertisers, partners, resource persons and other stakeholders that the leadership change will not affect the station’s commitment to independent journalism,” it said.
The Board added that, as the country moves towards the 2027 general elections, Signature Television “will continue to provide fair and professional coverage of political parties, candidates and issues of public interest, subject to its editorial policies and applicable broadcasting regulations.”
The assurance is particularly significant given the potential for perceived conflicts of interest when media executives become directly involved in partisan politics.
Board Thanks Ilo, Seeks Support For New Leadership
The Board thanked Ilo for his service to Signature Television and wished him success in his new political assignment.
It also called on the station’s management and employees to support the new interim leadership as the organisation begins what it described as “this new phase of leadership.”
“The Board thanks Mr. Ilo for his service as President and Chief Executive Officer and wishes him well in his new assignment,” the statement said.
It further called on “the management and staff of Signature Television to give the Interim President/CEO their full cooperation as the organisation enters this new phase of leadership.”
The statement was signed by Udo Ilo on behalf of the Board of Directors of Signature Communications Limited.
The leadership transition effectively separates Ilo’s new partisan political responsibilities from Signature Television’s editorial and managerial operations, while allowing him to retain his status as a shareholder in the company.
