The Nigeria Democratic Congress has constituted a 20-member National Selection Committee as part of preparations for its forthcoming Governorship and National Assembly primaries, in a move aimed at strengthening transparency, internal democracy, and credible candidate selection within the party.
According to a press statement signed by Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the decision followed the approval of the party’s National Leader acting on the recommendation of the National Working Committee (NWC).
The party explained that the committee would oversee the review, scrutiny, and consideration of reports submitted by the National Screening Committee and make final decisions regarding the screening outcomes of all aspirants seeking to contest under the NDC platform.
Former Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe was named Chairman of the committee, while Barrister Enekweizu will serve as Secretary. Other members include Buba Galadima, Udenta Udenta, Aminu Abdulsalam, and several other party stakeholders drawn from across the country.
The party said the committee’s inauguration has been scheduled for Monday, May 25, 2026, after which members are expected to commence deliberations immediately in line with the timetable for the primaries.
The NDC appealed to aspirants, stakeholders, and party faithful to cooperate with the leadership, noting that the committee would operate within tight timelines to ensure the successful completion of the exercise.
It further disclosed that only aspirants screened and cleared by both the National Screening Committee and the National Selection Committee would be eligible to purchase nomination forms for the primaries.
The party stated that the selection process was designed to encourage consensus-building among aspirants and promote the emergence of widely acceptable candidates through a free, fair, and credible mechanism.
According to the statement, where consensus arrangements fail, the party will conduct direct primaries between May 28 and May 30, 2026, in line with its established guidelines.
Reaffirming its commitment to reforms and inclusiveness, the NDC maintained that the constitution of the committee reflects its determination to strengthen party unity and position itself for electoral success ahead of the next round of elections.
