Distinguished Senator Alphonsus Ubanesse Igbeke has urged Nigerians, particularly the Muslim faithful, to uphold the virtues of compassion, sacrifice and peaceful coexistence as they celebrate Eid al-Adha.
In a goodwill message released in Abuja, the Development Expert and Lead Consultant to the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) said the festival offers a profound opportunity for reflection on faith, humility and service to humanity.
Senator Igbeke explained that Eid al-Adha symbolises the unwavering obedience of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail to the will of Allah, stressing that the season should inspire citizens to place collective wellbeing above selfish interests.
According to him, the significance of the Qurban extends beyond the ritual slaughter associated with the celebration, noting that it represents the need for individuals to purge themselves of pride, greed and other vices capable of undermining social harmony.
The former lawmaker, who also chairs the Technical Working Group of the ALGON National Gas Expansion Programme under the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources-Gas, stated that the values embedded in Islam’s five pillars remain essential for building responsible leadership, peaceful communities and accountable governance.
He said: “This sacred season calls every citizen, especially those entrusted with public leadership, to place service, justice and compassion above personal gain.”
Quoting the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, Senator Igbeke noted that genuine faith is reflected in love, mercy and fairness toward others irrespective of ethnic or religious background.
He added that the Prophet’s teachings emphasised peace through kindness, restraint and understanding, urging Nigerians to embrace tolerance and mutual respect in their daily dealings.
The ALGON Lead Consultant further prayed for national unity and divine guidance, expressing hope that the spirit of sacrifice associated with Eid al-Adha would inspire greater accountability and stronger bonds among citizens.
“May Allah accept the sacrifices of the Ummah, purify our intentions, and make us instruments of His peace on earth. Eid Mubarak,” he stated.
