BALOTRA, INDIA — Police in Rajasthan’s Balotra District have arrested two suspects allegedly involved in a violent attack on a wedding procession that left a participant injured by gunfire and sparked a major manhunt across the region.
The arrests followed an intensive nighttime foot-search operation through sand dunes conducted by officers of Dhorimanna Police Station as part of an ongoing crackdown on wanted criminals and violent offenders.
According to Balotra District Superintendent of Police, Shri Ramesh, IPS, the operation was carried out under a special district-wide campaign targeting criminal hideouts and fugitives.
The police chief said the action was undertaken under the supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police Shri Harphool Singh, RPS, and Circle Officer Shri Sukhram, RPS, while the operational team was led by Dhorimanna Station House Officer Shri Deep Singh.
Police stated that officers took “effective action” in connection with a case involving the obstruction of a wedding procession, gunfire, and a deadly assault, culminating in the arrest of two suspects identified as Ramnarayan, 19, and Devaram, 20.
According to investigators, the incident occurred on June 8, 2026, when members of a wedding procession were travelling in a tractor as part of a traditional Muklawa ceremony.
The complainant, Ashok Kumar, 28, of Shobhala Jaitmal village in Barmer District, reported that the procession was intercepted near Rohila Purva village by occupants of a black Toyota Fortuner vehicle.
In his statement to police, Ashok Kumar alleged that several men emerged from the vehicle and blocked the tractor’s movement.
According to the police report, the accused included Budhram alias Surendra, Dinesh Kumar, Ramnarayan, Devaram, and Naresh Kumar, all residents of the same locality.
Police quoted the complainant as stating that the suspects “snatched the tractor keys and fired pistols with the intent to kill.”
Investigators revealed that one of the bullets struck the ring finger of the complainant’s right hand, while another narrowly missed his knee. A third bullet reportedly struck the road nearby.
The police report further alleged that after the shooting, the assailants attacked the victim with sticks, causing multiple injuries.
Authorities said the complainant was eventually rescued by three bystanders identified as Ashok Kumar, son of Bhakhararam Vishnoi; Kisturaram, son of Chunaram Jat; and Harikishan, son of Mohanlal Vishnoi, who intervened during the assault.
Following the complaint, police registered a criminal case at Dhorimanna Police Station under Sections 189(2), 115(2), 126(2), and 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, as well as Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.
Police said multiple teams were subsequently formed to track down the suspects.
“To arrest the culprits, different teams were formed at the station level to search for them. During the search, raids were conducted in the Dhorimanna area and nearby villages,” the police said.
The breakthrough reportedly came after investigators received intelligence regarding the whereabouts of some of the suspects.
According to police, “based on an informant’s tip-off, the Dhorimanna Police Station team launched a nighttime foot-search operation in the sand dunes of Rohila Paschim under the Sedwa Police Station area.”
The operation led to the detention and subsequent arrest of Ramnarayan, son of Ladhuram, aged 19, and Devaram, son of Ramnivas, aged 20.
Police said both men were formally arrested after questioning.
“Following interrogation, both accused were formally arrested. Intense interrogation regarding the crime and the hunt for the other accused involved in the case are currently underway,” the police stated.
Authorities indicated that efforts are continuing to apprehend the remaining suspects allegedly involved in the attack and to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police command praised the officers who participated in the operation, highlighting the determination of the search team that combed the difficult desert terrain during the nighttime operation.
Members of the arrest team included Sub-Inspector Rawataram, Constable Asuram, Constable Jogendra Kumar, Constable Mohanlal, and Constable Rekharam of Dhorimanna Police Station.
Police authorities reiterated their commitment to pursuing violent offenders and ensuring public safety across Balotra District, noting that investigations remain active as detectives work to locate the remaining suspects connected to the shooting and assault case.
