ABUJA, Nigeria — The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has thrown its weight behind the House of Representatives Minority Caucus’ demand that President Bola Tinubu demonstrate stronger leadership in addressing Nigeria’s mounting challenges or consider resigning from office.
In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by its Acting National Chairman, Chief Peter Ameh, the opposition coalition said it fully supports the position taken by the Minority Caucus, arguing that the current administration must urgently tackle worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and declining living conditions across the country.
According to the CUPP, effective governance should be measured by tangible improvements in the lives of citizens, stressing that elected leaders must be held accountable for their performance.
The coalition declared that it “fully endorses the position of the House of Representatives Minority Caucus, which today called on President Bola Tinubu to either demonstrate effective leadership or resign from office.”
The statement further noted that the CUPP “fully aligns with this view and believes that the current administration must rise to the challenges facing Nigerians or make way for leaders who can deliver meaningful results.”
The opposition coalition argued that public office is a trust that demands results and accountability, insisting that failure to meet the expectations of citizens should attract consequences.
“In a sane clime, any elected official who refuses to produce results of good governance that will help make the lives of the people better should honourably resign,” Ameh stated.
The CUPP maintained that President Tinubu’s administration must urgently respond to the concerns of millions of Nigerians grappling with soaring living costs, insecurity, unemployment, and economic uncertainty.
“President Bola Tinubu and his administration must step up immediately to address the pressing issues of insecurity, economic hardship, and the general wellbeing of Nigerians,” the statement said.
The coalition further emphasized that leadership is a responsibility rather than a privilege, warning that public officials who fail to effectively discharge their duties should be prepared to relinquish office.
“Leadership is not a right but a responsibility. Where this responsibility is not being discharged effectively, the honourable path is resignation,” the CUPP declared.
The statement comes amid growing public debate over the state of the nation’s economy and security, with opposition parties and civil society groups increasingly calling for stronger policy responses to the challenges facing citizens.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic accountability, the CUPP said it would continue to advocate for policies and actions that promote good governance and improve the welfare of Nigerians.
“CUPP remains committed to advocating for good governance, accountability, and the welfare of all Nigerians,” Ameh said.
The coalition also called on the President to take urgent and visible measures to reduce the hardship being experienced by citizens nationwide.
“We urge the President to heed this call and take immediate, visible steps to alleviate the suffering of citizens across the country,” the statement added.
The CUPP concluded by assuring Nigerians that it would continue to scrutinize government actions and speak out on issues affecting the public interest.
“The CUPP will continue to monitor developments closely and will not hesitate to speak the truth in the best interest of the Nigerian people,” the statement concluded.
