….Delta State Students Shine at African Spelling Bee Championship, Secure Global Spot
Delta State has once again strengthened its reputation as a leading centre of academic excellence in Nigeria and Africa as two outstanding students from the state prepare to represent the continent at the prestigious Spelling Bee World Cup scheduled to hold in China in July 2026.
The young scholars, Chinedu Great Okediachi and Oghenetano Idoghor, earned global recognition after a remarkable journey through state, national and continental spelling competitions, culminating in their qualification for the world championship.
Their participation in the international tournament has received a major boost following the approval of financial support by Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who has pledged to ensure that the students fly the flags of Delta State, Nigeria and Africa at the global event without financial hindrance.
The students first demonstrated their academic prowess during the Delta State Spelling Bee qualifiers held at Bumi School, Warri, where they outperformed hundreds of contestants to emerge among the state’s finest young scholars.
Their success at the state level earned them tickets to the national finals in Port Harcourt, where they competed against top-performing students from across Nigeria. Through determination, intelligence and exceptional spelling skills, they secured qualification for the African Spelling Bee Championship held in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Representing both Delta State and Nigeria on the continental stage, the duo delivered outstanding performances that attracted widespread commendation.
Chinedu Great Okediachi emerged as the First Runner-Up at the African championship, ranking among the continent’s best young spellers, while Oghenetano Idoghor also distinguished herself with an impressive showing that placed her among Africa’s leading academic talents.
Their achievements have brought significant recognition to Delta State’s education sector and further highlighted the state’s growing profile in academic competitions and youth development initiatives.
Sources disclosed that the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Hon. Charles Aniagwu, played a key role in drawing the Governor’s attention to the students’ accomplishments and the importance of supporting their participation at the forthcoming global championship.
Upon learning of their achievements and the opportunity to compete on the world stage, Governor Oborevwori reportedly approved the necessary support to facilitate their trip to China.
The intervention has been hailed by education stakeholders, parents and community leaders as a strong demonstration of the administration’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, youth empowerment and human capital development.
Observers noted that the Governor’s decision sends a powerful message that educational achievements deserve recognition and encouragement just as much as successes recorded in sports, entertainment and other sectors.
Many stakeholders described the support as a strategic investment in the future of the state, noting that it would enable the students to focus on intensive preparations ahead of the highly competitive global championship.
The success story of Chinedu Great Okediachi and Oghenetano Idoghor has continued to inspire students across Delta State and beyond, serving as proof that dedication, discipline and quality educational support can produce world-class results.
As preparations intensify for the Spelling Bee World Cup in China, expectations are high that the two young ambassadors will continue their impressive run and further elevate the profile of Delta State, Nigeria and Africa on the international academic stage.
From their early triumphs in Warri to national success in Port Harcourt, continental recognition in Harare and now a global challenge in China, the journey of these exceptional students reflects a story of perseverance, excellence and the rewards of visionary leadership committed to nurturing young talents.
