ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has announced plans to convene its first-ever Economic and Housing Summit as part of a comprehensive programme aimed at strengthening economic opportunities, expanding home ownership and enhancing the welfare of Ndigbo residing in Abuja and across Nigeria.
President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo FCT, Hon. Chief Andrew Ugwu, disclosed the initiative during a media briefing in Abuja where he unveiled the organisation’s schedule of activities for the remainder of 2026.
According to Ugwu, the summit is slated for the first week of December 2026 at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, and is expected to attract government officials, financial institutions, real estate stakeholders, investors and development partners to deliberate on practical solutions to housing and economic challenges confronting members of the Igbo community.
He explained that the gathering would examine key issues including investment prospects, sustainable wealth creation, mortgage financing, diaspora housing programmes and urban development strategies.
Ugwu noted that the summit is designed to provide Ndigbo in the FCT with greater access to economic opportunities and affordable pathways to home ownership.
“Our objective is to ensure that every Igbo resident in the FCT has access to opportunities for economic advancement and home ownership,” he said.
The Ohanaeze leader also revealed that the organisation would formally launch the Ohanaeze Cooperative Society during the 2026 Igbo Day celebration scheduled for September 29.
He described the cooperative as a strategic vehicle for pooling resources, improving access to credit and supporting investments in critical sectors such as agriculture, commerce, real estate and micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs).
“The cooperative represents our determination to translate cultural solidarity into measurable economic benefits for our people,” Ugwu stated.
He added that the annual Igbo Day celebration would feature cultural displays, traditional music and dance performances, culinary exhibitions, arts showcases and discussions focused on community development and unity among Ndigbo.
As part of preparations for the programmes, Ugwu inaugurated a project committee headed by Hon. Mrs. Ginika Tor, while Chief Favour Odeta was named secretary of the committee.
The Ohanaeze president appealed to Ndigbo in the FCT, the South-East region and the diaspora, as well as friends of the organisation, to participate actively in the upcoming events. He also called on corporate organisations, government institutions and media organisations to support the initiatives.
He described the programmes as deliberate efforts to preserve Igbo cultural heritage while simultaneously promoting entrepreneurship, economic growth and sustainable development.
Responding on behalf of the committee, Hon. Mrs. Ginika Tor expressed appreciation to the leadership for entrusting the team with the responsibility and pledged to work diligently towards the success of the 2026 Igbo Day celebration and other projects.
She stated that although the programmes are primarily designed to benefit people of South-East extraction, their positive impact could eventually extend to other residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
Also speaking, committee member Mrs. Becky Okoroafor reaffirmed her commitment to the project, stressing her readiness to contribute her time and resources towards advancing the welfare and progress of the Igbo community in Abuja.
She described the initiative as a reflection of the collective determination of Ndigbo to improve the socio-economic fortunes of their people and strengthen their contribution to the development of the nation’s capital.
