The race for the Bende Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 general election has entered a new phase as Labour Party (LP) chieftain, Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, secured overwhelming grassroots endorsement from political stakeholders across the constituency, positioning himself as a major contender in what is expected to be a keenly contested election.
Anyaso, popularly known as “Ofuji,” received a unanimous endorsement during a stakeholders’ meeting held in his hometown of Igbere, Abia State. The gathering attracted leaders from all 13 wards of Bende Federal Constituency, while former elected councillors also declared their total support, pledging to mobilise voters across the constituency and beyond in support of his aspiration.
The endorsement marks a significant milestone in the build-up to the 2027 polls, with political observers predicting an intense contest for one of Abia State’s most strategic seats in the House of Representatives.
Speaking after accepting the endorsement, Anyaso pledged to provide purposeful and people-oriented representation built on the values of joy, peace, hope, dignity, humility and respect.
According to him, effective leadership begins with service to the people, expressing optimism that Bende Federal Constituency can witness greater development through inclusive and responsive representation.
His emergence has generated widespread political interest, with supporters pointing to his humanitarian record and years of community service as major factors behind the strong grassroots support.
Stakeholders noted that Anyaso has earned public confidence through numerous philanthropic initiatives, including the establishment of a free school in Igbere and empowerment programmes that have impacted thousands of young people across Abia State.
The Labour Party stalwart has also anchored his campaign on the principle of equity, maintaining that it is the turn of Bende North, particularly the Umunna axis, to produce the next representative of the constituency. He recalled stepping aside during the 2023 election cycle in the interest of fairness after the southern bloc had occupied the seat for two consecutive terms spanning eight years.
Beyond his local political engagement, Anyaso’s supporters also cite his intellectual contributions and leadership credentials. They referenced his invitation to speak at Harvard University’s IFE Institute, where he emphasised that enduring institutions are built on trust, character and responsible leadership rather than power or influence.
Anyaso is expected to contest the election on the platform of the Labour Party and has aligned his political movement with Governor Alex Otti’s administration, commending the governor for initiatives aimed at strengthening governance and restoring public confidence, including the payment of outstanding entitlements owed to councillors.
Presenting the aspirant to party stakeholders, the Abia State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze, described Anyaso as a credible, competent and visionary leader capable of providing effective representation for the people of Bende Federal Constituency.
However, the road to the Green Chamber is expected to be fiercely contested as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has already secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket unopposed to seek re-election for the seat.
With political mobilisation already gaining momentum, analysts believe the 2027 Bende Federal Constituency contest will revolve around grassroots mobilisation, zoning considerations, leadership credentials and the broader political rivalry between the Labour Party and the APC in Abia State.
As both camps begin to consolidate support ahead of the election, the Bende House of Representatives race is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched political contests in the state.
