The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), is set to confer degrees and diplomas on 12,895 graduands at its 55th Convocation Ceremony, with 168 graduating with First Class honours.
The week-long convocation activities, scheduled for Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25, 2026, will also feature the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on four distinguished Nigerians in recognition of their contributions to leadership, service and human development.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, disclosed the figures yesterday at a press briefing held at the Enugu Campus to herald the commencement of the convocation activities.
According to him, the 12,895 graduands comprise 10,641 candidates receiving first degrees and diplomas, while the postgraduate category accounts for 2,944 graduands.
Giving a breakdown of the postgraduate figures, the Vice-Chancellor said 1,390 candidates would receive Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, while 1,340 would be awarded Master’s degrees and 214 others would receive postgraduate diplomas.
Prof. Ortuanya described the convocation as a significant milestone in the university’s academic calendar, noting that the institution would also use the occasion to honour individuals whose contributions have had a positive impact on society.
He said four eminent personalities would be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees.
They are Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON; High Chief Williams Agbo; Arc. Dr. Kaycee Kelechi Orji; and Dr. William Franklyn Richardson.
The Vice-Chancellor said the honourees were selected because their lives and accomplishments exemplify “visionary leadership, distinguished service and enduring commitment to human development.”
The university will also confer the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus on two of its eminent scholars, Prof. Peter-Jazzy Ezeh and Prof. Boniface Obinna Okere.
The 55th Convocation is expected to bring together graduands, their families, members of the university community, government officials, academics and other stakeholders as UNN celebrates another generation of scholars entering the next phase of their professional and public lives.
The ceremony will also provide an opportunity for the institution to showcase its academic achievements and recognise outstanding contributions to scholarship, leadership and national development.
