ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Mrs. Ginika Florence Tor as a member of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, describing the move as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, equitable representation and the integration of competent professionals from the South-East into key national institutions.
Speaking during a media interaction on the sidelines of a homecoming reception organised in honour of Tor in Abuja, the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo FCT, Mr. Andrew Ugwu, said the appointment had rekindled hope among the Igbo people and reflected the President’s resolve to ensure every region of the country has a meaningful stake in national governance.
Ugwu commended the Tinubu administration for what he described as deliberate efforts to strengthen the participation of the South-East in government through strategic appointments, policies and development programmes.
According to him, Tor’s extensive experience in public service and leadership positions makes her well suited for the national assignment.
“Since 1999, this is the first time the Igbo people have been remembered. When I heard the news, I was thankful to the President for remembering our people,” he said.
He noted that the appointment had inspired renewed confidence across the South-East, adding that it signalled the Federal Government’s willingness to utilise the expertise of qualified Nigerians irrespective of regional background.
Ugwu also acknowledged ongoing infrastructure projects in the South-East, particularly road construction, saying they reflected the administration’s commitment to the region’s development, while appealing for additional interventions.
“Across the South-East states, we see a lot of road projects going on and this shows that the President is doing well, but like Oliver Twist, we still urge the President to do more for us,” he stated.
Expressing confidence in Tor’s ability to deliver, the Ohanaeze leader said she would make significant contributions to the commission’s mandate of promoting fair, sustainable and balanced wage and income policies for Nigerian workers.
Ugwu further congratulated Tor, who also serves as Chairperson of the Igbo Project Team 2026, on the international honour she recently received in Liberia, describing both the award and her federal appointment as fitting recognition of her professionalism, dedication and outstanding service.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Igbo community to supporting initiatives that promote national unity, inclusive development and equal opportunities for all Nigerians, while thanking President Tinubu for recognising the contributions of the South-East through the appointment.
Responding, Tor expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for considering her worthy of the appointment, describing it as an unexpected honour that came while she was in Liberia to receive an international award.
“I sincerely thank Mr President for this great honour. The appointment came to me as a surprise and I am deeply grateful for the confidence he has placed in me,” she said.
She recalled that she first learnt of her appointment through congratulatory messages and telephone calls from Nigerians while attending the event in Liberia.
“I was in Liberia to receive an award and that was where the news got to me. I started receiving congratulatory messages and calls from Nigerians who broke the news of my appointment to me,” she explained.
Tor also appreciated members of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo FCT Chapter, the Omalaegwuoku group, media practitioners and supporters who organised a colourful airport reception to welcome her home.
Reflecting on her public service journey, she noted that the appointment came shortly after completing her tenure as a Commissioner at the Federal Character Commission, describing the new role as a greater opportunity to serve the nation.
She emphasised that the appointment belongs not only to her but to the entire Igbo community and all Nigerians.
“I just want to say that this appointment is for everyone — the big, the small, the entire Igbo community and everyone. I remain committed to serving Nigeria with integrity, professionalism and unwavering dedication in line with the mandate of the commission,” she stated.
Tor assured Nigerians that she would justify the confidence reposed in her by working collaboratively with fellow commissioners and contributing meaningfully to policies that promote fairness, equity and national development.
