ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has dismissed as false reports circulating in the public space that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, asked Nigerian military personnel to reject a proposed salary increase until after the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the POMR Spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, the group described the report as a fabrication intended to misrepresent Obi’s position and create confusion around his views on the welfare of Nigeria’s security personnel.
POMR said the allegation emerged from what it described as attempts by political opponents to distort Obi’s messages and attribute statements to him that he never made.
According to the organisation, Obi had personally clarified the matter on his X account, rejecting the report and reaffirming his respect for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Obi stated that the report suggesting he had asked soldiers to refuse salary increments was “entirely untrue”, stressing that his commitment to the welfare and safety of Nigeria’s security forces remained unwavering.
He also reiterated his longstanding advocacy for improved equipment, adequate motivation and greater protection for security personnel serving the country under difficult conditions.
The former Anambra State governor cited the loss of soldiers to insurgency following a delayed rescue effort as an example of the security challenges that require urgent attention.
He questioned how personnel defending the nation could be left vulnerable when they themselves require protection and timely support from the government.
Obi further pledged that, if elected President, the welfare, resources, safety and dignity of members of the Armed Forces would receive priority under his administration.
“Those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern. Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” Obi said.
He maintained that servicemen and women should never be left exposed to danger without adequate equipment, institutional support and effective government intervention.
POMR urged Nigerians to disregard the circulating report, describing it as misleading and inconsistent with Obi’s publicly stated position on the welfare of security personnel.
The group said Obi remained committed to presenting what it described as a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.
POMR called on members of the public to verify politically sensitive claims before accepting or sharing them, particularly when such claims are attributed to presidential candidates.
