TCN Begins Emergency Reconstruction as Seven More Towers Face Collapse
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced emergency measures to address extensive vandalism that has caused the collapse of five transmission towers along the Ikot Abasi–Eket 132kV Double Circuit Transmission Line.
The incident, which has disrupted the integrity of the transmission corridor, was uncovered during a routine joint patrol by TCN linesmen on August 9, 2026.
Preliminary findings by the transmission company revealed that vandals had removed critical structural bracing members from Towers N9, J4, N10, N11 and N12.
The removal of the structural components weakened the towers and subsequently resulted in their collapse, according to TCN.
The company further disclosed that seven additional towers along the same transmission corridor had suffered similar vandalism, leaving them structurally compromised and at risk of collapsing.
The affected towers are J3, N8, N13, N14, N15, N18 and N19.
The latest development has raised fresh concerns over the vulnerability of Nigeria’s critical electricity infrastructure to vandalism and the potential consequences for electricity supply in affected communities and facilities.
In a bid to minimise the impact of the incident on power supply, TCN said it had reconfigured the network to prioritise electricity supply to Ekim Transmission Station.
The reconfiguration, however, has resulted in Ibom Power being the only station currently without supply.
TCN Management said it was mobilising an urgent intervention to reconstruct the damaged sections of the transmission line and restore the affected infrastructure to safe operating condition. 
The company also confirmed that security agencies had been notified to support investigations into the vandalism and help prevent further attacks on the transmission corridor.
Condemning the incident, TCN described the destruction and theft of transmission infrastructure as an act of sabotage, warning of its implications for the stability and reliability of the national grid.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a reliable national transmission network and stressed the need for collective efforts to protect critical electricity infrastructure from vandalism.
TCN’s latest intervention underscores the growing challenge posed by infrastructure vandalism to Nigeria’s electricity sector, as the destruction or theft of key transmission components can trigger prolonged service disruptions and impose substantial costs on the electricity system.
