ABUJA, NIGERIA — As political campaigns officially commence ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election, the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has urged Nigerians to pay close attention to the message, record and policy proposals of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Gregory Obi.
In a statement signed by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr., POMR described Obi as a “candidate of conscience,” urging voters to use the 150-day campaign period to critically assess the candidates seeking to lead the country.
The organisation said the commencement of the presidential campaign marks the beginning of an important period in Nigeria’s democratic journey, during which candidates will present their programmes, engage voters and seek to persuade the electorate ahead of the election.
According to POMR, the significance of the campaign extends beyond the competition for political office, as Nigerians will ultimately be deciding the direction they want the country to take.
“For us in the Peter Obi Media Office, these 150 days are crucial because they mark a journey that will culminate on January 16, 2027, when Nigerians decide not only who becomes president but also what kind of nation Nigeria will evolve into,” the statement said.
POMR framed the election as a contest between competing visions for Nigeria, contrasting what it described as longstanding challenges of waste, division and unfulfilled promises with a vision centred on competence, accountability, productivity and hope.
It said Obi’s political message has consistently focused on moving Nigeria “from consumption to production,” reducing the cost of governance, strengthening education and healthcare, improving national security and expanding economic opportunities for young Nigerians.
The group maintained that Obi’s appeal should not be viewed through ethnic, religious or regional considerations, arguing that his candidacy should instead be assessed on the basis of competence, capacity, character, compassion, commitment, record and policy proposals.
“Peter Obi enters this campaign not as a champion of one tribe, one religion, or one region but as a Nigerian seeking judgement based on his record, ideas, and vision,” it stated.
POMR urged Nigerians to expect an intense campaign season featuring rallies, policy declarations, political debates and competing promises, but cautioned voters against allowing political rhetoric to overshadow the fundamental issues confronting the country.
It challenged the electorate to determine which candidate possesses the integrity, discipline and capacity to address Nigeria’s economic difficulties, insecurity, unemployment and institutional challenges.
The organisation said Obi’s proposed approach to governance centres on rebuilding public trust through greater transparency, reduction in the cost of governance, investment in productive sectors and ensuring that public resources are deployed for the benefit of citizens.
According to POMR, the former Anambra State governor’s campaign represents a broader call for a political system in which public office is regarded primarily as an instrument of service rather than personal enrichment or political reward.
“This is more than a campaign for votes. It is a call to Nigerians who believe that public office should be an instrument of service, not personal enrichment; that leadership should unite rather than divide; and that every child, regardless of birthplace or background, deserves the opportunity to succeed,” the statement said.
The organisation also urged Nigerians to scrutinise the records and policy positions of all presidential candidates rather than voting on the basis of ethnicity, religion, political affiliation or sentiment.
It argued that democracy is strengthened when citizens make informed decisions based on evidence, competence and a clear understanding of the choices before them.
POMR said Obi’s public career, particularly his tenure as governor of Anambra State, provides voters with a basis upon which to assess his claims about prudent management of public resources, investment in education, healthcare and infrastructure, and fiscal responsibility.
It further emphasised that political leadership should not be regarded as an inheritance or reward for loyalty, but as a responsibility that must be earned through demonstrable competence, character and measurable results.
As the campaign season gets underway, POMR called on Nigerians to listen carefully to every candidate, examine their manifestos, scrutinise their records and assess the feasibility of their promises before making their choices at the polls.
“The road to January 16, 2027, begins effectively today. History will remember not only those who sought power but also those who chose the future they wanted for their country,” the organisation said.
It said the coming months would test both the presidential candidates and the electorate, adding that Nigerians have an opportunity to determine the kind of leadership and country they desire.
“The next 150 days will test not only the candidates but also the conscience of the nation. History is calling. Nigeria is watching. The world is watching. The future is waiting,” POMR stated.
The organisation concluded with a direct appeal to Nigerians to listen to Obi’s message and judge his candidacy on its merits.
“Let the campaign begin. Let the people decide. And let Nigeria choose hope over fear, competence over propaganda, and conscience over convenience,” it said.
POMR presented Obi as a candidate it believes is prepared to lead the country towards what it described as a new era of unity, accountability, prosperity and national renewal.
“Listen to him,” the statement urged Nigerians.
