The Obidient Movement has welcomed the decision of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, which, according to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court in Lokoja ordering the deregistration of the party.
The movement described the appellate decision as significant to Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, particularly in protecting the constitutional right of citizens to organise, associate and participate in the country’s political process.
In a statement issued on September 21, 2026, and signed by its Media & Communications Directorate, the Obidient Movement said the NDC had challenged the Lokoja judgment at the Court of Appeal, which has now set aside the lower court’s decision.
According to the statement, the ruling preserves the NDC’s registration and its ability to participate in political activities and elections.
“The decision is significant because the right of citizens to organise, associate and participate in the political process is fundamental to a functioning multiparty democracy,” the movement said.
The Obidient Movement commended the judiciary for what it described as the appellate review of the matter, stressing the importance of judicial decisions that protect the constitutional space for political participation.
It further maintained that political parties should be allowed to exist and compete within the framework of the law, warning against unnecessary restrictions or uncertainty surrounding legitimate political participation.
“Political parties must be allowed to exist and compete within the framework of the law,” the statement said.
“No democratic system can function properly where the political space is unnecessarily restricted or where legitimate political participation is placed under uncertainty.”
The movement therefore welcomed what it described as the clarification provided by the Court of Appeal and urged all relevant institutions to respect the decision.
It also called for the NDC and its candidates to be allowed to participate in the electoral process in accordance with the law.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, the Obidient Movement urged political actors to shift their attention towards issues, policies and the interests of Nigerians.
“The responsibility now rests on all political actors to focus on issues, policies and the interests of Nigerians as the country approaches the 2027 elections,” it said.
The movement further declared that the struggle for a stronger multiparty democracy must continue through lawful, constitutional and democratic means.
It concluded with its familiar declaration: “Nigeria must be OK.”
