Chima Anyaso supporters attacked in Ugwueke has triggered alarm in Bende Federal Constituency. The Director-General of the Chima Anyaso Campaign Organization has condemned the incident. He described it as a coordinated assault on democracy.
Pastor Dike Okechukwu raised the alarm on Tuesday. He is the DG of the campaign for Labour Party candidate, Dr. Chima Desmond Anyaso. The attack occurred in Ugwueke/Ezeukwu, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.
Supporters Assaulted During Door-To-Door Campaign
According to Okechukwu, the incident happened in the last 24 hours. Suspected political thugs attacked two supporters of Dr. Anyaso. The supporters were engaged in door-to-door sensitization for the Labour Party candidate.
He said the victims were carrying out peaceful mobilisation. However, they were assaulted by suspected thugs. Therefore, the campaign has called for urgent intervention by security agencies.
We Won’t Succumb To Threats — Campaign DG
The Campaign DG condemned the attack in strong terms. He described it as barbaric, cowardly and a threat to democratic freedom. In addition, he said it violates the right to peaceful participation in elections.
“We will not succumb to threats and intimidation. No amount of violence or harassment will stop the will of the people of Bende,” Pastor Okechukwu stated.
He alleged a growing pattern of intimidation ahead of 2027. According to him, supporters of Dr. Anyaso have become targets. He noted that Bende has always been known for peaceful politics. Consequently, the development is worrisome.
Campaign Demands Police Investigation
Furthermore, Pastor Okechukwu called on security agencies to act swiftly. He urged the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, DSS, to investigate the matter. He also demanded arrest of perpetrators and protection of lives and property.
Meanwhile, he appealed to Bende residents, especially youths, to remain calm. He urged them to stay law-abiding and avoid retaliation. He assured that the campaign remains committed to peace and issue-based engagement.
“Our campaign is built on ideas, development, and prosperity for Bende. We will not be dragged into violence,” he added.
“We urge our supporters to remain steadfast and continue to preach our message of hope,” Okechukwu said.
As of press time, the Abia State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement. However, the campaign says it will continue its ward-to-ward engagement across Bende.
